हिंदी कथा संसार में ब्रिटिश लेखन  लन्दन 18 मई  किसी भाषा का उत्कर्ष  तभी सम्भव है जब उसका साहित्य अपने देश की सीमा से परे भी सृजित हो. इन दिनों हिंदी में जिस क़िस्म का साहित्य ब्रिटेन में रचा  जा रहा है उसे पढ़ कर सहज ही कहा जा सकता है कि इसने अपनी एक विशिष्ट पहचान बनानी शुरू कर दी है . अब इसमें  भारत को लेकर नोस्टेलजिया नहीं है वरन लेखकों के कथानकों  में अपनी इस नई कर्मभूमि से जुड़े सरोकारों , यहाँ के रहने वालों के सामाजिक अंतर्द्वंद , सामाजिक ताने बाने से जुड़ी समस्याओं की झलक देखने को मिलती है.  इसका अंदाज़ा आज स्थानीय नेहरू सांस्कृतिक केंद्र में आयोजित कार्यक्रम से हुआ जहां नाटिंघम की हिंदी कथाकार  सुश्री जय वर्मा द्वारा सम्पादित पुस्तक  “ब्रिटेन की प्रतिनिधि हिंदी कहानियाँ “ का लोकार्पण हुआ .  लोकार्पण नेहरू सांस्कृतिक केंद्र के निदेशक और लेखक अमीश त्रिपाठी के द्वारा संपन्न हुआ , कार्यक्रम में ब्रिटेन के जाने माने साहित्यकारों के साथ ही  ब्रिटिश सांसद वीरेंद्र शर्मा भी मौजूद थे .  मुझे याद आता है महेंद्र भल्ला का उपन्यास ...

ब्रिटेन की सबसे पुरानी किताबों की दुकान अभी भी प्रासंगिक है . पिछले कुछ सालों से अपने देश के विभिन्न शहरों में पुस्तकें पढ़ने वालों की संख्या लगातार घट रही है इसी के साथ नामी गिरामी किताबों की दुकानें एक एक करके बंद होती जा रही हैं . और जो किसी तरह बची हुई हैं वे दुकान के बड़े हिस्से में बच्चों के खेल खिलोने , पर्फ़्यूम.  कास्मेटिक्स रखने के लिए मज़बूर हैं . ऐसे में लन्दन के सबसे फ़ैन्सी इलाक़े पिकडली में हैचार्डस में कुछ घंटे बिताना बड़ा ही सुखद अनुभव रहा. हैचार्डस पुस्तकों की  विशालतम दुकान  है जहां पुस्तक प्रेमियों की भीड़ लगी रहती है .  यह महज़ लन्दन की ही नहीं वरन संभवतः दुनिया  की सबसे पुरानी पुस्तकों की दुकानों में से एक  है .  हैचार्डस  की स्थापना 1797 में व्यवसायी जॉन हैचार्डस द्वारा की गयी थी , जॉन पुस्तक प्रेमी और प्रकाशक  भी था यही नहीं  वह दास प्रथा के विरुद्ध के ज़ोरदार आवाज़  भी था.उसकी यह दुकान  अपने इसी पते 187, पिकडली से निरंतर कार्यरत है . दुकान की  बाहर की साज सज्जा को देख कर लगता है...

पूरे परिदृश्य को बदलने वाले युग पुरुष रविंद्र नाथ टैगोर की लंदन में याद …. दो राष्ट्रों का राष्ट्र गान और एक देश के राष्ट्र गान की संकल्पना किसी एक ही व्यक्ति के खाते में हो , बात अविश्वसनीय सी लगती है . गुरुदेव रवींद्र नाथ टैगोर के लिखे हुए गीत भारत और बांग्लादेश के राष्ट्रगीत हैं और श्रीलंका का राष्ट्रगीत उन्ही की  प्रेरणा से शांतिनिकेतन में उनके शिष्य ने लिखा था . यही नहीं उनके द्वारा लिखा समग्र साहित्य , पेंटिंग और संगीत किसी एक व्यक्ति के जीवनकाल में लिखा जाना सम्भव नहीं लगता . बिना स्कूल कालेज में डिग्री हासिल किए हुए ललित कलाओं का एक विश्व स्तरीय विश्वविद्यालय खड़ा कर देना गुरुदेव के बस की ही बात थी . साहित्य में गीतांजलि पर साहित्य का नोबल पुरस्कार अपने आप में आद्वित्य था क्योंकि इससे पूर्व किसी कविता संग्रह को नोबल नहीं मिला था. टैगोर ने दुनिया भर में अमेरिका से लेकर यूरोप , जापान, ईरान , दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया की कई यात्राएँ की थीं और उस दौरान वहाँ के राष्ट्राध्यक्षों, साहित्यकारों, चिंतकों , वैज्ञानिकों से संवाद किया था .उनके सोच का समाज राष्ट्रीयता की सीमा में बंधा नहीं था....

I visited yesterday London branch of legendary MTR 1924 restaurant in Rayners Lane Harrow area.  Before I describe about the food let me take you back to the history. In 1924, Parameshwara Maiya, decided to start a small restaurant on Lalbagh Fort Road in Banglore    along with his two friends Ganappayya Maiya and Yagnanarayana Maiya, it was initially called the Brahmin Coffee Club serving coffee and idlis. In 1960, the restaurant shifted to location on Lalbagh Road, Banglore , and grew in stature and name. The name was changed to MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room) , it became a landmark. In 1976, the management decided to start making and selling mixes like the Rava Idli mix and the Kharabath mix on the premises. That was also beginning of packaged food revolution from there on, there was no looking back.
