London Also have MTR1924 Now

I visited yesterday London branch of legendary MTR 1924 restaurant in Rayners Lane Harrow area.

Before I describe about the food let me take you back to the history. In 1924, Parameshwara Maiya, decided to start a small restaurant on Lalbagh Fort Road in Banglore  along with his two friends Ganappayya Maiya and Yagnanarayana Maiya, it was initially called the Brahmin Coffee Club serving coffee and idlis.

In 1960, the restaurant shifted to location on Lalbagh Road, Banglore , and grew in stature and name. The name was changed to MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room) , it became a landmark.

In 1976, the management decided to start making and selling mixes like the Rava Idli mix and the Kharabath mix on the premises. That was also beginning of packaged food revolution from there on, there was no looking back.

MTR arrived in Ranyars  Lane this year in January, so London also started getting authentic taste of Mavalli Tiffin Room famous with its acronym MTR.

The restaurant does not have an elaborate menu , very few choice but get its fill of the legendary, idlis, dosas, Mendu Vada , Uttappa and of course the filter coffee for  that MTR is famous for nearly a century and now  provides stiff competition to the other Indian restaurants in the vicinity especially Sarvana Bhavan .

What impressed me more in the restaurant the open kitchen , the guests can see throw the glass panel what exactly being cooked inside. And by the way , story of their dessert Chandrahara  is very interesting. During fifties , one of the original partner of MTR Yagnapa invented this inspired from French Pastry during his visit to Europe and christened it French Sweet. But it did not sell, but he was very confident of his preparation and renamed it as chandrahara seeing the movie  Chandrahara running in the nearby theatre . Rest was the history, the dessert became instant hit.

MTR’s precise standardisation of flavour, quality and ambience across its numerous outlets in India has sustained since the early days of the brand. In keeping with this, the Rangers Lane  branch is trying to keep that well. The  iconic red interiors and the vintage MTR 1924 signage also give a feel of flagship Fort Road Banglore Brahmin Coffee Club
