कोल्ड ड्रिंक पीने का मजा पतले प्लास्टिक की नली, जिसे आम भाषा में स्ट्रॉ कहा जाता है, से ही आता है. यही कारण है कि घर से लेकर रेस्त्रां तक इसका इस्तेमाल जबरदस्त तरीके से किया जाता है. एक अध्ययन के अनुसार दुनिया भर में यही कोई 830 करोड़ प्लास्टिक स्ट्रॉ समुद्र में हर साल बहा दिए जाते हैं. यदि घनत्व के हिसाब से बात करें तो यह प्रति मिनट समुद्र में प्लास्टिक से भरा एक ट्रक प्रति मिनट फेंके जाने के बराबर है. प्लास्टिक स्ट्रॉ समुद्र में फेंके जाने वाले कुल प्लास्टिक का 0.025 प्रतिशत ही है लेकिन इसके खतरे बहुत हैं। मछलियां और अन्य समुद्री जीव जंतु इसे भोजन समझ कर निगल जाते हैं , जिससे वे जख्मी होते हैं, कई बार ये इन निरीह जंतुओं के मुंह में भी फंस जाते है जिसके कारण उनकी मृत्यु तक भी हो जाती है. पिछले वर्ष ब्लू ओशियन नेटवर्क ने मेक्सिको सागर तट पर पाए गए मरे हुए समुद्री कछुओं के वीडियो पोस्ट किये थे , उन सभी में एक बात पायी गयी कि उनके नाक या मुंह की नाली में स्ट्रॉ फंसे हुए थे , इसे लेकर दुनिया भर में पर्यावरणविदों ने काफी काफी शोर शराबा किया था और फिर प्लास्टिक स्ट्रॉ के विकल्पों पर गंभीरता...
