क्या गुलशन नंदा के पल्प साहित्य का पुनर्मूल्यांकन होगा ? लिखे हुए शब्द अगर आम जन तक पहुँच जाएँ और वो इसे सराहे तो यही उसके कालजयी होने का प्रमाण है . अंग्रेज़ी भाषा से ही पल्प लिटरेचर शब्द निकला है इसी की नक़ल पर घर घर तक पहुँचने वाले साहित्य को हिंदी में लुगदी साहित्य कह कर समीक्षकों द्वारा बहुत कुछ नकारा गया है जबकि यह साहित्य खूब बिकता रहा है, ख़ास बात यह है कि पश्चिमी देशों में बहुत सारा जो  पल्प के रूप में निकला बाद में साहित्य की श्रेणी में स्वीकार कर लिया गया . हमारे यहाँ आज भी पल्प को नीची निगाह से देखा जाता है और उस पर बात करने वाले को बुद्धिजीवी श्रेणी से बाहर कर दिया जाता है.  आज हम हिंदी रोमानी पल्प के बादशाह गुलशन नंदा की बात करने जा हैं  जिन्होंने  60और 70के दशक में  खूब जम कर लिखा .वे 1929 को आज के पाकिस्तान के शहर गुजरांवाला में जन्मे थे . अपने शुरुआती दिनों  में वे दिल्ली के बल्लीमारान में एक चश्मे की दुकान पर नौकरी  करते थे.किसी ने उनके द्वारा लिखे कुछ पन्ने देखे और उन्हें उपन्यास लिखने की सलाह दी और वे  लेखन की ओर आ गए . एन.डी. ...

हिंदी फ़िल्में और उनके प्रति नफरती माहौल  इन दिनों आप हिंदी फ़िल्मों के प्रति जो नफ़रत भरा माहौल देख रहे हैं वो कोई नया नहीं है . यह दंश हिंदी फ़िल्में यही कोई साठ वर्षों से देश के भिन्न भिन्न प्रांतों में झेलती आ रही हैं . मैंने कलकत्ता में वो दौर देखा है जब हिंदी फ़िल्मों का बाक़ायदा बायकाट होता था , प्रदर्शन नहीं होने दिया जाता था . बंगाली फ़िल्म वालों को लगता था अगर हिंदी फ़िल्में प्रदर्शित करने दी गईं तो वे बंगाली संस्कृति  को बिगाड़ देंगी और बंगाली फ़िल्म उद्योग को लील जायेंगी . यही भाव चेन्नई ( भूतकाल के मद्रास) का था. क्या मजाल कि वहाँ हिंदी फ़िल्मों का प्रदर्शन हो और अगर जुर्रत की तो हिंदी फ़िल्मों के पोस्टर फाड़ने से लेकर जुलूस और धरने तक हुआ करते थे . इन्ही नफ़रतों के बीच हिंदी फ़िल्मों ने देश में और देश के बाहर बसे  भारतीय उप-महाद्वीप के प्रवासियों ( जो अपने आप को भारतीय , पाकिस्तानी, बांग्लादेशी , अफ़ग़ानी की जगह देसी कहलाना पसंद करते हैं ) के बीच अपनी जगह बनाई . सही बात तो यह है कि यूरोप और अमेरिका के रहने वाले देसी लोग हिंदी फ़िल्मों से ही अपनी पहचान करते ह...

आख़िर ग़ैर फ़िल्मी संगीत वेंटीलेटर पर क्यों है  याद कीजिए सातवें , आठवें और नौवें दशक में ग़ैर फ़िल्मी संगीत ने फ़िल्मी संगीत के समानांतर एक अलग ही साम्राज्य स्थापित कर लिया था . इसके चलते अनूप जलोटा भजन सम्राट बन गए  , जगजीत सिंह , मेंहदी हसन, ग़ुलाम अली , राजेंद्र नीना मेहता , पंकज उधास, चंदन दास , घनश्याम वासवानी, भूपेन्द्र मिताली  ग़ज़ल की दुनिया के चमकते सितारे बने , उषा उत्थूप , अलिशा चिनॉय , अनाइडा, प्रीति सागर , शिल्पा शेट्टी , कोलोनियल कज़िन(शंकर एहसान लोय) , बाबा सहगल पॉप जगत पर छा गए . आख़िर क्या बात है अब ग़ज़ल, भजन , पॉप संगीत के ऐसे संग्रह क्यों नहीं आते जिन्हें सुन कर हम झूम उठें , अच्छी ग़ज़लें सुने जमाना हो गया , कुछ फड़कता हुआ पॉप संगीत सुनने को नहीं मिलता . या यूँ कह लीजिए कि ग़ैर फ़िल्मी संगीत वेंटीलेटर पर है . आख़िर ऐसा क्यों हुआ जैसे हुआ यह जानना ज़रूरी है , संगीत कंपनियाँ भी या तो आख़िरी सांसे ले रही हैं या फिर संगीत से इतर ही कुछ बेच रही हैं .  जहां इंटरनेट ने पूरी दुनिया मुट्ठी में ला दी वहीं संगीत का बड़ा अहित भी किया है आज हर संगीत प्रेमी क...

Shoemaker After Shoe Dog  Three years back, I read Shoe Dog , memoirs of Nike’s founder  Phil Knight . It was a powerful tale of triumph against all the odds, revealing the challenges and sacrifices that go into creating a iconic global shoe  brand; it is also the story of how a small local business can transform itself, with the right products and the right vision, into something much, much bigger.  Similarly co-founder of REEBOK  Joe Foster wrote Shoemaker. He is on a visit to India these days. I am lucky to meet him yesterday thanks to my friend Anurag Batra.
