Jambu Has Arrived  Wax Apple or Water Apple is available at fruits shops for a limited period of three/ four months starting from the middle of Feb .  in Western and Southern part of India . The big, juicy, bell-shaped fruits when ripen, provides good nutrition and hydration especially for children during the hot summer months. These fruits range in color from creamish white, light green, green, pink, red, purple and even black depending on the species. The taste of the fruits also vary depending on the species ranging from very tangy, to mild and watery. Ripe fruits have a thin but waxy skin which protects the fruit from insects and pests, and gives it the name wax apple. The flesh is spongy with a cotton-candy-like center which contains 2-4 seeds. Kulthi Katha  While I was posted in Pithoragarh,  a remote part of Uttrakhand during eighties , the locals insisted us to make Gahad Dal , an specialty of the area , as a part of our daily food habit keeping in view of its tremendous health benefits that includes diluting kidney stone. It’s local delicacy was Dubke or tasty dumplings.  Few years later,  I came to  Bombay, than realised  that the same Gahad Dal has its local avatar in  Kulith  Dal.  It is also known as Horsegram as horse gram dal is mostly fed to horses from ages. अकरम इलाहाबादी - पल्प में विज्ञान कथा  पिछले कुछ दिनों से में भारत और ख़ासकर हिंदी और उर्दू में प्रकाशित रोमानी और जासूसी उपन्यासों के चंद लेखकों को अपनी स्मृति से खंगाल कर बाहर लाने की कोशिश की है .  यूँ तो उन्हें पल्प साहित्य की श्रेणी में रखा जाता रहा लेकिन ये पल्प लेखक जो भी लिखते थे वो आम पाठक से आम पाठक की ज़ुबान में संवाद करता था इस लिए खूब बिकता था . जब मैंने इब्न-ए - सफ़ी के बारे में लिखा तो उनके लगभग समकालीन अकरम इलाहाबादी का ज़िक्र नहीं किया , इसे पढ़ कर मेरे अग्रज और क्राइम लेखक ए टी ज़ाकिर ने कहा कि मैंने अकरम जी के साथ न्याय नहीं किया. दरअसल अकरम की genre थोड़ी अलग  थी उन्हें विज्ञान कथा लेखक कहना ज़्यादा मुनासिब होगा , हाँ इसमें जासूसी और अपराध भी शामिल होता था .  अगर इब्न-ए - सफ़ी की जासूसी दुनिया पाठकों में लोकप्रिय थी तो अकरम इलाहाबादी की जासूसी पंजा भी कम लोकप्रिय नहीं थीं. उनके पहले उपन्यास में चंद्रमा पर रहने वाले लोगों की कहानी थी जो अपनी मायावी तरंगों से पृथ्वी पर भूकंप लाते हैं.   उनकी सलाज़र श्रृंखला खूब लोकप्रिय हुई थी , मुझे आज भी...

Well done Bhikaji : Sweet Water Well  While coming from Church Gate Station towards Flora Fountain , I have seen   Well on ‘n ‘ number of time. But yesterday night, while passing through I stopped for a while , saw it closely and read a small plaque on the entrance of structure, I realized that it is now almost 300 years old !  Little curious to know, why the well  was named after Bhika Behram, there is a small tale behind it. The vast expanse of Cross Maidan was a matter of concern for travellers who came there during the summer season. It is to address this concern that a prominent Parsi named Bhikaji, who had travelled from Bharuch on foot  , dug this fresh water well. It was first opened to travellers in 1725. The well has been  a perennial source of sweet water, which is remarkable as most of the water in the area is brackish owing to the proximity to the Arabian Sea. Reading Mind of A Booker Award Winning Translator : Daisy Rockwell  Geejanjali Shree’s Hindi novel Ret Samadhi had become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Award. Originally released in 2018, Tomb of Sand , the English translation of the novel done by Daisy Rockfield. The novel  traces the unconventional lease of life an elderly woman gets was published by Penguin India in March 2022. It is the story revolves around an 80-year old woman who slips into depression at the death of her husband, but then comes out of it to tackle life once again. Based on a tragic premise, the story however has a playful tone and exuberant wordplay. एक जमाना था जब इब्न-ए-सफ़ी जासूसी उपन्यासों के भारतीय उप महाद्वीप के बेताज बादशाह  हुआ करते थे . इलाहाबाद में जन्मे और आज़ादी के बाद कराची  में जा कर बस गए असरार  अहमद का इब्न-ए-सफ़ी  पेन नेम था.  पाकिस्तान चले जाने के वावज़ूद उनके उपन्यास इलाहाबाद से जासूसी दुनिया सीरिज़ में निकलते रहे .  एक बार पूर्व प्रधान मंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री ने कहा था वे भी इब्न-ए-सफ़ी के फ़ैन थे . अब से तेरह वर्ष पूर्व उनके कुछ उपन्यास Random House ने अंग्रेज़ी में अनूदित करके प्रकाशित करके उन्हें पल्प से बाहर निकालने की कोशिश की थी .  इब्न-ए-सफ़ी के  बाद कर्नल रणजीत के क्राइम थ्रिलर ने भी खूब हंगामा मचाया , इस घोस्ट राइटिंग के पीछे उर्दू मिलाप में काम करने वाले मक़बूल जालंधरी थे .   क्राइम थ्रिलर और जासूसी नावेल लिखने में सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक ने भी ज़बरदस्त नाम कमाया है उनके सारे उपन्यासों को जोड़ा जाए तो उनके प्रिंट करोड़ से अधिक बैठेंगे. फिर भी साहित्य से जुड़े  लोग उन्हें पल्प लेखक  ही मानते हैं . आज़ादी से पूर्व खेमकरण, अमृतसर, पंजाब में जन्मे प...
