Hindi Poetry :

Rajesh Jhala's Documentary 'Floating Lamp of the Shadow Valley'

Image
Yesterday,  I  got an opportunity to see Rajesh Jhala's Documentary 'Floating Lamp of the Shadow Valley'  at Alliance Francaise De Bombay which is a stark reality of Kashmir.  Jhala is a Kashmiri by birth and like thousands of other Kashmiri Pandits he was also compelled to leave valley after their houses were looted and burnt, old, young, children were butchered and murdered. Jhala stayed in Refugee Camp in Delhi for almost eight years undergone through lot of trauma , his own pain are reflected in the documentary on subtle level frame by frame. Arif''s life in Floating Lamp of the Shadow Valley Before seeing Jhala's documentary, I also saw Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider which is also on the backdrop of Kashmir and has a subtle overtone glorifying separatist movement without understanding the reality of region. One needs lot of courage to depict truth in the politically incorrect environment. Film runs on two different level, one - a narrative ...

Ranganathan of Cavinkare who Locked Horns with FMCG MNSs

Image
Unilever and Proctor & Gamble are the two giants who dictate the entire FMCG market in Asia. They had a first real challenge in seventies in the washing powder segment from a Ahmedabad based entrepreneur Karsan Ghavri in such a way that these MNCs were compelled to redesign their market strategies in the washing powder segment, lowering prices and most importantly the diversifying the product range. Due to the internal push and pulls Patel’s Nirma could not sustain its growth and now become not so significant player. The second serious challenge came from an entrepreneur C K Ranganathan from South India, in early eighties. He started his company Cavinkare in 1983 in Shampoo segment with a seed capital of just Rs15000. The first years’ turnover was Rs. 5 lac . In the initial years the growth was slow. There is no look back for Ranganathan, his company diversified product range and become a strong force to reckon within India with annual turnover Rs 1200 Crore and now spreads its ...

Orbit Shifting Transformations Can Happen : S R Rao and HisExperimentation with Surat City

Image
Can you believe that a Municipal Commissioner can transform India's filthiest city , that too with 30 lac population , into the second most clean city of the country with in a span of 20 months, sounds impossible, but it was exactly done by S R Rao in Surat that too after 1994' worst epidemic Plague. An IAS officer of 1978 batch with no previous experience in running a municipality, S R Rao joined Surat as Commissioner in 1995, every body said nothing is possible due to draconian old laws, political pressures and interference, unwilling and corrupt officials, limited budget. For a month initially he spent his time just observing what was happening around him, held meetings, spoke to cross section of people, walked all around the city. This has helped him to identify core issues behind city's problems. Rather than attacking the symptoms of the problems, Rao drilled down to these core issues affecting the functioning. And he finally decided to transform the city by Admini...

Why Western Countries Put Blind Eye On Terrorist Grown On Pakistani Soil

Image
Some time I wonder why western countries avoid taking any firm stand on terrorism grown on Pakistani soil though in private conversation they accept it as a stark reality. Former Indian High Commissioner in UK J Bhagwati wrote some time back that a senior British Official said in private conversation with him that 'if Pakistan knew Osama Bin Laden was hiding only few kilometre from Pakistan's Military Academy in Abbottabad then it is a rogue State and if it did not know Osama was living at this location for over five years than it is a failed state.' Despite such no nonsense observations and realisation in private, USA, UK and other Western Governments have never demanding of Pakistan in public. In contrast, West is on-off arming dissidents and bombing Iraq, Libya, Syria and Afghanistan's area bordering with Pakistan to stop covert and overt involvement with terrorism. Indian analysts are often exasperated and even apoplectic about why they perceive a wilful c...

What is Killing World Economy

Image
Paul Krugman , a world renowned economic thought leader, has recently commented that the world economy appears to be stumbling and he says it is because of Righteousness. This is a very serious issue and the challenge before the world leaders. Letus talk about the reason and how it can be fixed up. The worst news is from Europe, but this time there is also clear slowdown in the emerging markets - and there is even warning sign in United States, despite creation of more jobs . Why does it keep happening, after all , the events that brought on the Great Recession- the housing bust, the banking crisis- took place a long time ago. Why can not we escape their legacy. A series of policy mistakes are responsible for this situation - austerity when economies need stimulus, paranoia about inflation when the real risks is deflation, and so on.But why do the governments keep making these mistakes year after year. The real answer is an excess of virtue, Righteousness is Killing the world...

Converting Family Business Into A Corporate Entity

Image
In our country industry segment has always been dominated by family controlled businesses. In the early seventies, when the entry into private sector was controlled by multiple layers of filters, business families represented most of the private sector initiated new venture creation. For a variety of reasons, business families chose to or compelled to manage their business venture in certain ways. With a immature Stock Market and limited ownership outside the family, it was the responsibility of all the family members to take care of the health of their business. It is important to remember that in the seventies most of the private businesses were controlled by the family members of different business communities. Education and skills were considered secondary to own a business, only the non family employees used to be professionally qualified. In other words, business was an opportunity for the family members to engage themselves role of the professional employees was limite...
