Watching Rare Breed of Orca Whales

Watching Rare Breed of Orca Whales

Surrounded by water, but accessible by bridges, Anacortes is the Home Port of the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Yesterday, we enjoyed Orca Whale watching over there.
Located on beautiful Fidalgo Island, Anacortes is conveniently situated between Seattle and Vancouver BC and is the favored departure point for the San Juan Islands and only 90 mile from Down Town Seattle.
There are no ferry hassles necessary, we chose better way -  just drive off of the mainland and discovered many more things in Anacortes apart from the main attraction - Orca Whale Watch.
Anacortes is a vibrant Old Town , it has small population of 18,000 but a very vibrant community. It has plenty of  restaurants, fun little shops, antique stores, and art galleries, you won't run out of things to do in Anacortes. After browsing for local artwork or visiting the Farmer's Market one can grab a handmade sandwich at Gere-A-Deli and head for the forest! There are quiet pocket beaches, perfect for picnicking or watching the Sun setting over the San Juan Islands.
The beating heart of Fidalgo Island is the 2800 acre Anacortes Community Forest Lands. Within this protected forest lies over 50 miles of trails, 4 beautiful lakes, and lush groves of old-growth trees.
Anacortes is a convenient starting point for your wildlife adventure - no ferry required! The calm waters near the San Juan Islands are one of the best places in the world to view wild orcas. Humpback whales, minke whales, and, gray whales also call the region home. Soak in the natural beauty of the Pacific ocean.
The Salish Sea is located in the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. state of Washington,  and is home to one of the richest varieties of marine life on the planet. There's no better place to view the booming population of Bigg's, or mammal-eating killer orca whales. In addition to orcas, humpback whales, minke whales, and gray whales are also frequently seen throughout the year.
For orca sighting adventure, we took a three level high powerful boat to sail from Anacortes Port. Equipped with modern gadgetry , rich whale tracing experience and professional naturalist guides the boat had given us an opportunity to sail in the pacific water where we could be able to see many islands and beauty of pacific.
The boat took us into the deep water where dividing line between USA and Canada is very thin, it sailed up to the waters from where Victoria’s skyline is prominently visible.  Victoria is one of the most beautiful city of Canada.
While sailing in the powerful boat, initially we could be able to see only white and grey colored small, wading birds called sanderlings. There was no trace of orcas in the initial two hours sail.  Suddenly the guide on board announced on public address system to watch on right hand side of the boat, first glimpse of orca and of course only fin was visible. Boat operator put it on zero speed, as he did not want to distract orcas. Thereafter the magic started , one after the other two big fish or three in a row here there and around the boat.
If lucky in the same pacific water one can see harbor seals, sea lions, Dall’s and harbor porpoise, bald eagles and many types of sea birds.
The tour almost took four and half hour time, covers 60 miles through some of the most beautiful scenery we had ever enjoyed .
