Next Big Thing In Seattle After Birth Of Boeing
A prototype all-electric airplane took its first flight Tuesday out of Moses Lake City two and half hour drive from Seattle.
The plane, named Alice, was in air for eight-minute at an altitude of 3,500 feet.
A dream of electric power propelled aircraft became a reality three days back when first flight was executed with near perfection. Gregory Davis, President and CEO of Eviation shared his joy with people gathered to witness the event.
The plane operated with electric fuel that do not produces carbon emissions, significantly reduces noise and costs a fraction to operate per flight hour compared to light jets or high-end turboprops.
The plane is developed by Eviation an aviation startup, it is targeting the at the commuter and cargo markets and aims to operate flights ranging from 150 to 200 miles.
As per estimate, 50% of the global air travel is to the destinations less than 500 nautical miles and about 20% of all air travel is less than 250 nautical miles. According to the start up CEO Davis the company plans to target that part of the market for its planes.
Eviation also believes that it can "dramatically reduce" the cost of air travel with its electric technology upto two third of a traditionally-fueled airplane which may create a kind of market disruption in aviation sector.
This will, coupled with the lower maintenance requirements for the electric motors in the aircraft.
Alice is powered by just over 21,500 small Tesla-style battery cells that, at just over 4 tons, make up fully half the weight of the carbon composite airframe.
They drive electric motors designed and built by MagniX in Everett a satellite town of Seattle.
The technology is pioneering and puts this region once again at the forefront of efforts aviation as it is birthplace of Boeing.
The Alice commuter plane, flying short intercity routes, is a third possibility for the electric aircraft future that has also attracted several competitors. Among the most promising, Italian airplane maker Tecnam developing the P-Volt, an all-electric version of its existing nine-passenger, piston-powered P2012 model, and aims for a first flight by 2026.
In reaching first flight, even if only a prototype, Eviation’s all-electric technology is ahead of such competition.
Out of Seattle, Alice expects to fly to Vancouver, Victoria, Bellingham, Portland, Walla Walla, Yakima, Moses Lake, Spokane in 2024 if everything goes as per plan and necessary aviation safety approvals.
