Sula Wine : Desi Wine Destination

Sula Wine : Desi Wine Destination
I have vivid memory of my first visit to Sula Winery and Vineyards almost eleven years back with my friend Amitabh Bishnoi. I had little curiosity to know how an Indian Winery functions. But after my visit I realized that despite his limited means founder Mr. Rajeev Samant created a commendable winery, perfect vineyard and a functional tasting room. A session of tasting coasted only Rs250.00.
Samant studied engineering at Stanford University and worked at Oracle in San Francisco thereafter. Samant came back to establish Sula after leaving a well paid Corporte job.
Sula Vineyards is located amidst the rolling hills of Nashik overlooking the Gangapur Dam. Now a days many more wineries in the area. Our visit to Sula vineyards and winery was an enjoyable experience, the wine tasting room overlooks the vineyards with panoramic views of the Gangapur lake. During 2008 there was no restaurant there, we had to limit ourselves to cheese and crackjack!
Now they have developed ‘Source at Sula’, India’s first heritage winery resort, with a Tuscan twist or 'Beyond by Sula' that houses a world-class infinity pool.
Winery is not very faraway from my home base Mumbai, it took only four hours to reach, now with better roads you can reach in three hours in lean traffic. In fact, the winery is in the periphery of Nashik, so during the visit to winery you may also take holy dip in Godavari!
The property is a 35-acre vineyard and for the amount of wine that Sula produces, it wasn't as large as we expected it to be. However, that's because Sula has an additional few hundred acres of vineyards spread elsewhere in the region.
Now the winery organizes SulaFest, which takes place the first weekend of February now it is biggest party party event in the area and one of India's best boutique music festivals. The winery swarms with revellers, hyped up on juice and partying to the sound of over 120 live bands and internationally acclaimed DJs on three stages.
If we talk about the products, these days they have Red, White, Rose as well as Sparkling but definitely the cut above is Dindori. Using Shiraz, it is deep garnet in the glass. It has a nose of blackberry and roasting meat offering a sophisticated mélange of flavors, in particular ripe red cherry, smoke, roasting meat, cranberry and light spice with a hint of brambles. It is very bright on entry, but tannins sneak up and then linger on the gums beyond a smooth finish that is punctuated by a touch of smoke.
