Tuscany Province Of Italy is not only known world over for its wines but also but for enchanting landscapes, history, artistic legacy, and its influence on high culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. And Siena is one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany. It is surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti,. Set on three hills, the city is drawn together by winding alleyways and steep steps, whilst the Piazza del Campo stands at its heart, and the Duomo and St Maria della Scala serve as additional cultural landmarks.
Siena is a good place to base yourself for a Tuscan experience. The Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful countrysides in Italy and a famous wine production area.
La Lastra is a family owned winery closer to Siena town. For the couple Nadia Betti and Renato Spanu it is not only winery and Vineyard , but it is a project of rural life that they started in the early eighties
At that time it’s all stakeholders were in their twenties and just completed high school diploma in Agricolture at Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige and then moved to San Gimignano to complete the studies in wine growing and oenology.
Since the very beginning this hilly countryside rich in history, beauty, and authenticity had enchanted The couple to the point of starting a bold project of life: a project of sustainable vine growing.
After ten years of studies and work as vine and wine experts in the countryside of the Sienese area, in 1994 Nadia along with her husband Renato Spanu, her brother Christian Betti together with the friends Enrico Paternoster and Valerio Zorzi founded La Lastra, with the prime goal of producing high-quality, sustainable wines, as a pure expression of the territory were they are produced.
In 2000 they added San Gimignano - Marciano, to La Lastra , located very close to the city centre of Siena and immediately started the farming activities following organic methods, they still live with their today.
White Wines
La Lastra’s Tuscany in White is represented by Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a century-old autochthonous vine its peculiar chemical features, can produce white wines to be released after at least two years of aging. The winery has two different labels, a basic version and a Riserva.
Winery’s production of red wines, all typical of the area, features five different labels
- Chianti Colli Senesi and Rovaio obtained with the grapes coming from their vineyards located in San Gimignano, currently converting into organic methods;
- three wines obtained with single grape varieties viz,Canaiolo Nero, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, coming from our winery in Siena, wherरवतhave been following organic methods since 2000.
Guided by the great passion that inspires those who devote their lives to agriculture as a free personal choice, Nadia and Renato Spanu cultivate vineyards and olive trees following organic methods. The vinification of all their red grapes takes place in their beautiful ancient wine cellar in Marciano, while in San Gimignano they turn into wine their Vernaccia di San Gimignano grapes according to the local wine law.Another interesting feature about this winery and vineyards is that their farm immersed in a wild life protected area, can be visited for a pleasant walk in the heart of nature, where you can meet many wild creatures: foxes, porcupines, hares, pheasants, wild boars, roe deer... that here have found a home away from hunters and pesticides. A wonderful experience! Renato shares his knowledge, expertise, and passion for wine, winemaking, and food wIth visitors . His explanation of respecting the rules for Chianti and the rules for organic farming are clear and illuminating. The vistas, wine, and homemade farm-to-table lunch is incredible. From Siena, You can take a local bus and then walked a mile to reach the place. Returning to Siena, you may walk the whole way - about three miles. Definitely a terrific escape from the crowds and sounds of the city.
Like everything at the Agriturismo Marciano, wine tour of the Marciano Vineyard is a perfection. The tour of this organic vineyard with Christian, a dedicated oenologist loaded with Phd degree in winemaking, is fascinating and informative. Christian has a commitment to cultivating the land with a great fundamental respect for the natural resources of this beautiful vineyard in Siena. The tour begins in the vineyard, with a walk through the fields where he explains the laborious process of growing and tending the delicate fruit. The grapes are cultivated organically to produce some of the most delicious wine you have ever tasted. The tour continues to the wine cellar where Christian explains the winemaking process; the grinding, fermenting, storage and bottling of the wine. We then walk to a beautiful tasting room to experience the amazing fruit of his labor.
