Post House : Boutique Winery Of Western Cape
The Western Cape is South Africa’s picturesque region, it’s coasts border the Indian and Atlantic oceans. It's also known for the port city of Cape Town, set beneath Table Mountain, part of a National Park of the same name. In Table Bay, Robben Island is the famous prison that once held Nelson Mandela, and is now a living museum. Farther afield, winelands surround historical towns like Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. This area is also very famous for its boutique wineries. This time we will talk about Post House Winery.
In the year 1981, Hermann Gebers bought a small farm in the picturesque area between the towns of Somerset West and Stellenbosch . The winery is situated on a ridge, offers panoramic views of Cape Point, False Bay and the surrounding Helderberg Mountains.
As of now, the vineyard comprises of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and a sprinkle of Viognier.
The farm was systematically planted to vine. In 1996, Wine Maker Nick Gebers made a couple of experimental barrels. Two vintages later, and after a stint in Burgundy, the first vintage was released. As the homestead on the farm had originally operated as a post office, serving the local missionary community of Raithby, it was a logical step to associate the wine with its postal origin. The wines were thus named Post House.
The cellar only produces a small quantity of wine and assumes a hands-on and conscientious approach at each step. With creativity, the whole wine package is fine-tuned.
Interference is kept to a minimum during the wine making process. Therefore, the grapes are handled as gently as possible. The grapes are harvested into small fruit bins, where they are checked and sorted before being lightly crushed and de-stalked.
The signature wine of this winery is Penny Black. It is a blend of Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot and Chenin Blanc. Dark inky color. Full vibrant sweet nose of blackcurrant and blackberries. Little peppery and chocolate from the Shiraz. Subtle tannins and luscious ripe fruits. Good paring with a south african red meat braai/ bbq.
