What To Eat What Not To Eat : Part 2 Unpeeling the Mystery of Gluten

We have heard a lot about Gluten - a kind of protein found in wheat and certain other cereals regarded as a villain, responsible for wide spread inflammation in the body. Western countries, especially America spend billions of dollar on gluten free diets in an effort to protect health.

But Dr. Steven R  Gundry, Director, International Heart and Lung Institute, Palm Springs, California feels that in this process we miss the real cause of problem. He says that gluten is just one variety of a common and highly toxic plant based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the gluten free foods, most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and conventional dairy products. Such proteins are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds and leaves of plants from predators, that includes humans also. Once consumed, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to serious health conditions.

So, the lectins are every where and threat to health. Dr Gundry offers simple hacks, to me his findings a very much similar to the age old Ayurvedic wisdom, we can easily follow to avoid the ill effects of lectins which includes :

Peel your veggies
Lectins are concentrated in the leaves, peels, and seeds of plants ; simply peeling and deseeding vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers thus reduces lectin's content.

Eat only Seasonal Fruits
Fruits are to be consumed just ripe. The reason is when fruits are just riped, they contain fewer lectins. So eating apples and berries and other lectin containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps to minimize lectin consumption.

Swap your brown rice for white.
Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress-and are full of lectins.

Use lectin blockers
Glucosamine and Methyl Sulfonylmethane (MSM), D-mannose  acts as lectin blockers. These products are available in vitamin stores. First combination helps in arthritis pains and D-mannose helps to cure urinary tract infections. By the way, D-mannose is active ingredient in cranberries, but if you take cranberry juice normally contain lot of sugar so the results may not be fully effective.

Sugar Defense
All of us know ill effects of sugar on our body but if we feel that merely stopping consumption of sugar will solve the problem, you are mistaken. We consume sugar through so many other sources.  Corn syrup and any simple carbohydrate also rapidly breaks into sugar when consumed. Find out combination of chrominum, zinc, selenium, cinnamon bark extract, berberine, turmeric extract, and black pepper extract. This combination helps you to effectively manage sugar level in your blood stream.

Long-Chain Omega-3s
Now a days people are deficient Red Blood Cell bound omega-3 levels.  Omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)  are brain-boosting fats. The brain is approximately 60 percent fat.  Half of the fat in our brain is DHA, and other half is arrchidonic acid (AA)- a great source of which is egg yolk. Studies suggests that people with highest level of omega-3 fats in their blood have better memory. Find out molecularly distilled fish oil which comes from from small fish such as sardines and anchovices.
