Green lungs of Bombay under threat due to fire : It is the time to act

Probably Bombay is only metropolitan city in India which can boast to have a National Park  within its municipal limits.

Our  Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Bombay works works as green lung for the city and is habitat for variety of animal as well as home to rare  flora and fauna.

The area close to the periphery of SGNP is also very green,  a part of that is under possession of a Builder.   National Green Tribunal has clear directives that the area in the periphery of a  National Park will also be protected area , but no body has a answer that how such area is in a builder's possession.

From last few years this green area adjoining to SGNP is systematically converted into barren land piece, the builder has army of workers who roam freely with all the potent weapons to destruct green trees. And every one in administration knows it but no body in bothers about this.

Yesterday night's fire which encompasses 4 km area is clearly the last ditch to burn the greenery left there. This fire was so potent, if the wind would not have direction towards Filmcity it would have engulfed lives and property of thousand and thousand people living in New MHDA bungalows, Nagri Niwara as well as MHDA flats. If you closely see the images of the  fire,  you can clearly see the pattern that it is man made. What a paradox that if someone destroy a tree in an urban area he will be behind the bars, but here the whole  jungle but no action so far.

Fire authorities had tough time to contain the fire as the builder had erected a km long wall laced with barbed wires, so fire fighting equipment were manually taken on the tough hilly terrain.
The government should institute an impartial inquiry (which I doubt would ever be) and make its finding public.

If the land is allowed to be converted into urban concrete jungle than the crore plus population of the  city will be deprived of the pure air.

There is an urgent need to set things right,  the onus will be on government  agencies but it is the time citizens to act.

I give below images of the area after 12 hours, you can see the land without trees.
