Upnishad Simplified : Gems of Aitareya Upnishad

Vedas are other name of 'the sacred knowledge'.The vedic literature is organized into four segments, viz. :

1. Rigveda, the Vedas of the verse
2. Samveda, the Vedas of songs
3. Yajurveda, the Vedas of sacrificial Text
4. Atharveda, so named after Atharvan, the mythical priest of the past ages.
      
  Upnishads are  theological and philosophical reflections about the essential nature of things. They are also called Vedanta, literally meant - end of Veda, the final goal of the Veda, because it was, as a rule, located at the end of the Brahmana. Upnishads are also literally called 'confidential session' with the teacher, later meant as 'secret lore' because it used to be imparted to the pupil towards the end of the period of instruction.  
I have tried to bring out few gems from prominent Upnishads.
The Aitereya Upnishad  is basically from Rigveda. It belongs to the school of the Aitareyins who process the Aitareya Brahman and the Aitareya Aranyaka, in which latter in included the Aitareya Upnishad. The Upnishad of Aitareyins in a strict sense in strict sense one of the shortest Upnishads and it appears that this school has found more delight in the mystry of its Ukthas than in the considerations about the world-spirit. It talks about the creation by Atman, he created universe and human.
It has also tried to find out answer to a question which sages and knowledgeable people tried to find out 'Who am I ?'.
This Upnishad tried to answer in the last part.  After creation of human, the Atman enters into the man through the vidrti (cleft), the seam or suture of the skull, in which he has three places of residence (sense, manas and heart) and three states (stations) of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. He looks around at all beings and finds that among them there is no one whom he could designate as other or different from himself but that, nevertheless, of all, the man is Brahman.
 Few gems from this Upnishad :

सृष्टि के आरम्भ में  आत्मन थे निपट अकेले 
तय किया एक दिन रच डालूंगा विश्व मैं पहले  
इस तरह रच दिए कितने ही  साधन प्रबल 
बाढ़ , प्रकाश - अंतरिक्ष ,   मृत्यु और जल 
रच डाला  बाढ़ के आगे और नीचे भी स्वर्ग 
पृथ्वी मृत्यु  थी  और जल इसके संग संसर्ग 
इस तरह हो गयी विश्वों की रचना अब पूरी 
और बनाये संरक्षक ताकि देख रेख हो पूरी   
फिर जल से पुरुष का किया रचना विधान
नमन आत्मन को जो रचा  अद्भुत निर्माण  
जो मुख खोला शब्द निकल कर बाहर आए 
अग्नि प्रगट हुई शब्द से ऐसे दृश्य नज़र आए
खुली नासिका इससे प्राण निकल कर आए 
प्राणों से उत्पत्ति वायु की ऐसे चमत्कार दिखाए 
जब आत्मन ने आँखें खोली इससे दृष्टी आई 
दृष्टी से आदित्य बने ऐसी कथा संतों ने गाई 
कान अलग बंटने से श्रवण चेतना आन जगे  
रची दिशाएं श्रवण शक्ति से,स्वर्ग के आवास बने 
रोम छिद्र खुलने से बालों का विकास हुआ 
बालों से पेड़ों - पौधों का जा कर निर्माण हुआ
ह्रदय विभाजन से मानस आस्तित्व में आया 
मानस से ही इस सृष्टि में चन्द्रमा उपजाया 
नाभि खुलने से अपान प्रस्फुटित हो कर आया 
अपान से मृत्यु निकली ऐसा संतों ने बतलाया 
जनन अंग बंटने से वीर्य उत्सर्जित हो कर आया 
वीर्य ही वह कारण जिससे जन्म धरा पर आया 

विश्व संरक्षक देवमूर्ति अपनी रचना के बाद 
अथाह सागर में लगे डूबने और उतराने 
कहने लगे देव सागर से इक ऐसा स्थान बताओ 
जहाँ रह सकें और समय पर भोजन पाएं
यह सुन कर सागर ने उनको गाय प्रस्तुत कर दी 
देवों ने सागर को बोला नहीं इससे संतुष्टि होगी 
सागर ने सोचा और  दिखाया  उनको   घोड़ा 
देवों ने सर हिलाया इससे नहीं समस्या हल होगी
उसने देवों  के आगे  फिर मानव को पेश किया 
देवों ने एक स्वर में बोला अपना लक्ष्य पूर्ण हुआ 
यह मानव ही अपने लक्ष्यों को कर पायेगा पूरा 
सुन कर सागर ने यह सब देवमूर्तियों से बोला 
अपने स्थान अनुरूप करें प्रवेश मानव के भीतर 
वायु प्राण का रूप धरे पहुँची नासिका के अंदर 
और आदित्य पहुंचे  आँखों में खुद दृष्टी  बन कर 
दिशा आ कर बैठ गयीं कानों में बोध बन कर 
मृत्यु ने  नाभि में आपन बन कर स्थान लिया 
जन्म ने वीर्य रूप धर जनन अंगों में प्रवेश किया 
भूख प्यास मानव से बोलीं हमें दो थोड़ा स्थान 
मानव ने दिव्यात्माओं के साथ उसे दिया सहभाग
भूख प्यास तब बलि भोज में बनी  देवों के साथी  
मानव संरचना आत्मन ने कुछ इस तरह बना दी......
