Battery Dance of new York City Enthralled Contemporary Dance Lovers
Mumbai 13th January

Jonathan Hollander founded Battery Dance in New York City in the year 1976. He choreographed more than 75 works of contemporary dance and taken these works to five continents. His works are in style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. His works are known for  connecting  the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. He is currently on an All India Tour covering New Delhi, Bangaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai. In this series his troupe  performed at St. Andrews Auditorium on 11th January and enthralled the dance lovers.

His work "Shakti : A Return To The Source' was appreciated by the audience. It is basically about woman empowerment, the entire concept revolves around Goddess Durga and her journey, she overpowers, destroys evil in form of demons. It starts with forming a human chain, gradually it gathers momentum, resolving into pas de deux offering suggestive and iconic poses of Goddess Durga in action. Translating pure classical concept on old composition of Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra into contemporary dance form would be a real challenge, which Hollander and his team of dancers consiting Mira Cook, Clement Mensah, Bethany Mitchell, Sean Scantlebury, Robin Contrell and guest Indian Classical dancer Unnat Hassan Rathnaraju have managed. The performance captured the essence of Shakti, the divine female energy.

Terra & Astra, a two part composition, depicted  earthly realm of man and woman relationship to the celestial orbiting of planets in the sky.It was choreographed by Sean Scantlebury and composed by  Olafur Amalds and Nistirenko. The moves were sensual but very artistic.

Guest Indian Classical performar Unnath Hassan Rathnaraju  presented Kauthavam, it was about Lord Subramaniya. He is worshiped in South India in the form of a serpent and son of Shiv - Parvati. It was an effort of Battery Dance to include various dance forms in their rich repertoire.

Observatory,  is a result of Battery dance's one month tour of South Africa, where the team met with Theo Ndindwa of iKapa Dance Theatre who is from Zulu tribe, It was based  Theo and his British wife Tanya's own  experience of pulse and energy in city of Cape Town especially the integrated neighborhood of observatory.
