Job Interview At The Age Of Eight

I remember my first job interview in the age of  21. I was very nervous. It was November month very pleasant cold weather , but when I entered in the board room, I was profusely sweating, and when the chairman of the board asked me first question, I almost started stammering. The chairman sensed that I am comfortable  and offered a glass of water. It was only after that, I felt composed and faced the remaining part of interview. Thereafter I have faced few other interviews but I always lacked confidence. The reason was very simple. There was no body to guide me to face interview.

My grand daughter is 8 year old. She studies in third standard in Seattle and stays in her school at Eagle Club for her before and after care. She shared me a month back that she has a job interview on the coming Friday. I was rather surprised  and little curious to understand what kind of job interview she is going to face.

She elaborated , her role will be hand-holding and mentoring nursery kids ! And emoluments ? 'Oh, I will receive Eagle currency' she quipped.

That is the beauty of American culture that right from the tender age, children are are trained to shoulder social  responsibility. Come summer time, younger people get plenty of seasonal jobs, if you know swimming you may work as trainer at swimming pool; museums, national parks, libraries are some of the places where you will find students working as volunteers. Orchards also engage the young force to pick up fruits and berries in summer. My grand daughter was taking her private swimming lessons at YMCA, I was surprised that her trainer was a  14 year old young one. I saw her confidence while giving swimming lessons.Children also play smart during summer to offer various kind of services of their own.  Children will approach you to mow lawns, removing weed, paint fence, grills and gates ofcourse for a price, you do not have time and it is costly to call a labor for such a  small job. So it is a  win win situation .

This exposure helps them to understand the responsibility of various kind of  jobs and also to earn good pocket money. Once they finish their college, it is easier for them to work with confidence from day one !

Now I come back to where I started, the job interview of my grand daughter. She had three rounds  of  interview, cleared the first two but could not make it up in the final round. Despite her failure, she did not had any hard feeling rather happy that she could clear the first two rounds. Her initial exposure to face interview has given her confidence that she says not a  problem, I will face interview next year and  try to get the assignment.

Assigning certain jobs to younger people also help the society to run its various social initiatives without much strain on its resources and in the process to prepare tomorrow's workers today.
