Why You Should Write Poetry

Now a days it is little difficult to read poetry in India. Reasons are many. The popular weeklies, fortnightlies and monthlies have met slow death, now you may find only news periodicals. And TV channels are full of political cacophony, in that space finding some place for literature and that too poetry is difficult. The Kavi Sammelans are meant for only mimicry artists, comedy central or joke cracker kind of people.

But you have to find out some space for poetry. Reason is very simple. Poetry has power to heal the heart and awaken soulfulness in our own voice. I know several doctors who are also poets, and they actually prescribe reading and writing poetry as a  healing practice for their patients. The words said aloud or silently  have resonance that can shift our feelings, thoughts, and even biochemistry, bringing healing and creativity. The rhythm, breath, and sound connect to heart, mind and spirit.

A poem expresses something in a distilled and refined manner, to be savored and sipped slowly!

I myself find writing poetry when I want to express the essence of an experience. It helps to create what i call word palettes-a collection of luminous words to use like the colorful tubes of paint that inspire my art. I keep my eye out for words, as if I am searching for them like sea glass on the beach. Then I take them out to play around with creating words as sacred as prayer.

I ask sometime to myself,'Why poetry why not story or a novel'?

Answer comes from within,' Poetry works in mysterious ways-ultimately unknown and unknowable. Something happens in poetry that takes us to our deepest origins, our roots, in rhythm, in pulse beat of an irretrievable past. Poetry has magic that normally people do not understand, while leading us to greater understanding, greater awareness and deeper connection.

I feel that my world without poetry would be like a world without bird chirping or ocean waves or fog flying over the face of moon.

Now Tip : How to become a poet

Begin a word palette. Look through books, such as art, poetry, or even garden books, finding new and interesting words, and then keep on listing them in a scrape book-or write them on little pieces of paper and keep on putting them in a jar. Use them to compose some verses. It is like adding new spices to your pantry and experimenting them to expand your cooking. Read poetry out loud to inspire your own rhythm of language and use of metapher ( start with Ghalib, Jigar, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Nirala, Ravindra Nath Tagore). Listen to poets reading, either live or recorded. It will definitely inspire you to compose your own poem, ghazal, haiku or a sonnet.
