Our breakfast is incomplete without presence of bread. It used to be one of the most favorite item even on our Grand Pa and Grand Ma's breakfast table, they fondly called it dabal roti and in their time came only one shape and size. But with change of time it has changed that too in many ways. Now you have exotic varieties with titles such as ' multigrain', '5 grain' , '9 grain' , 'artisan' , 'crusty', 'stone ground'. These new variants are available in supermarkets, premium bakery stores in upscale locales. Naturally price of these new avatars of bread are much much higher than our good old maida bread.
Let us just try to find out whether these new avatars of bread are really as healthy and nutritious as claimed to be. If you read the ingredients then you can easily find out the malarkey behind this marketing gimmick .
Most of these loaves list whole wheat flour as the first item. Manufacturers are required to give ingredients in descending order of fibre, vitamins and minerals. The second most important ingredient you will find in the list plain white wheat flour, which is really covert name for maida, which every one knows is really bad stuff. List never indicate that what is the ratio of whole wheat vs. Plain White Flour. The top two ingredients in the premium Ragi Bread are again whole wheat flour and plain White flour ! Of course, Ragi is rich in calcium and fibre and helps reduce cholesterol - this ingredient figures out as third item in the list ! Now the question is how many slices would youeatto derive those claimed benefits ? Probably the whole loaf!
Even breads boasting dry fruits, nuts and seeds are not wholesome as they appear. The sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, apricots, raisins et al are listed after yeast and salt, which should give you an idea just much of the good stuff is present in this costly loaf.
You might have come across a very popular brand of bread which claims it's 3 slices give the same amount of protein as a bowl of dal. The big question is why on earth would you compare the nutrients in pulse with that of a grain - two different food groups altogether - unless it is to misled the customers ! Simple funda is that there is a rightful place for both pulses as well as grains in your diet , there is simply no question of eating one in place of other.
Some of these staples also hide a sizeable amount of butter-mind it, not margarine or vanaspati- which offers little comfort, if you consider the calories only add up once you apply more Amul on your slice.
So if you are paying a hefty price for premium loafsin belief they are better than the plain maid a bread, there is inexpensive way to make your morning meal more healthy - buy normal price bread and top up your toast with all nutritious ingredients you desire !
