Can a small fishing village transform into world's biggest business centre ?

The answer is yes.

Shenzhen used to be a small fishing village on the shore of mainland China, not for away from Hong Kong only 35 years back. Today, it is financial and business capital of China, headquarters of three of world's top mobile handset companies ZTE, Lenevo, Huawei. It boast to be biggest manufacturing hub of China. Other worth mentioning names operating from the city are TCL Corporation, Coolpad, Konka, BYD, Dingoo, Skywork . Globe trotters, who have visited the city in the recent years claim that it outsmart any of the world's biggest or the most beautiful city.

Now the question is, how this miracle could be possible within a short span of 35 years ? In the year 1979 Chinese supreme leader Deng Xiaoping began a process of economic reform that kick-started China's complete economic transformation. One year later i.e. in 1980, Shenzhen, nestled just across the border from Hong Kong, was made 'Special Economic Zone', a laboratory for testing Capitalism within the Communist regime of China. Today, it is really difficult to believe while visiting this megapolis with 18 million people that only three decades back it was a fishing village with a population of 30,000 fisherman. More interesting to note that our Maharasthra politicians were boasting to convert Bombay into Shanghai, a megacity in it's own right even in the year 1980.

The great Chinese visionary Deng came to Shenzhen on his southern tour in the year 1992 and made a landmark speech signalling economic reforms. Today, the city boast per capita GDP of the city US $ 13581 which is far higher comparing to the national average, though the skeptics doubt this figure, but one thing is certain that in terms of prosperity, this city is far ahead of other Chinese cities. The rapid growth is an outcome of free flow of foreign capital in the city. Around 1990 it was described as constructing one highrise a day and one boulevard in three day! Today more then 25 buildings are above 200 meters height including Kingskey 100 boast to be 9th tallest building in the world, then Shun Hing Esquire is 19th tallest in th world.

Shenzhen is a city of migrants-even though one may be deep in the province of Guangdong or Canton. But the language spoken here is not Cantonese(which is commonly spoken in next door Hong Kong) butMandarin, the language of power in the country. This city is the fasted growing city in China (probably in world also) in terms of technology, trade and transportation capabilities. The new terminal at the city's Baon'an Airport stretches for 1.5 km and boast to be an architectural marvel, with cost Euro 735 Million roughly equivalent to Rs.6,25,00,00,00,000. It has a perforated honeycomb 'skin' that allows in natural light.

During the recent years, number of Indians travelling for business to Shenzhen has increased substantially. With the result, Indian restaurants have also grown up in the city serving South Indian to North Indian varieties, Bollywood Cafe, Spice Circle, Bombay, 1947 and Taj Mahal are strategically located.

Shenzhen is sub tropical, for tourists, October to December is the right time to travel, as the temperature is pleasantly cool during this period. From Hong Kong it is very well connected. From Hong Kong Airport it takes only 78 minutes by train spending US $ 60. travelling by bus is a cheaper option it costs only HK$31. The city planners tried to create a number of tourists spots like window of World, Splendid China Folk Village, Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Shekon Sea World, Happy Valley. Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre is a carved crystal palace and hallmark of modern construction, it is always full of activities.
