Bollywood films : Best Way to Advertise a Destination

Remember, every Yash Chopra film used to have Switzerland in it. Be it a song and dance sequence or without any reason some snow clad peaks, breath taking lakes, scenic meadows from this paradise on earth was there. The captured images of Switzerland in Bollywood movies fascinated Indian middle class so well that comparing to any other European destination, tourist inflow to the country was much higher. That was the Bollywood power. It is not surprising that Swiss Government honoured Yash Chopra with highest decoration for promoting Switzerland. Many other countries around the world followed the suit and were able to have better footfall of Indian tourists. Krish 2 was shot in Singapore and it was sponsored/ heavily subsidised by Singapore Tourism Promotion Board . Karan Jauhar has soft corner for America, take a tour of his movies you may have a complete guidedtour for New York.Tell me honestly, how many Indians knew Spain as a serious Tourism destination, the whole perception changed after release of Jindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Rockstar converted Prague into a hot tourist spot. During last five years every other film producer was packing for some exotic foreign locale to shoot.

But I found some interesting change during last few months. Now many producers are spotting Indian locales for shooting . Even smaller towns of India are now a big draw for a new breed of Bollywood producers. Reasons for this sudden change are many, movie plots are getting more real as are the locations which now almost constitute a character in the Film. Shooting in small towns is giving higher return on investment. 2014's noticeable release Dedham Ishkiya was basically shot in Lucknow peeping into decay of Nawabi culture. Anubhav Sinha's Gulabi Gang was shot in Bundelkhand which is part in Uttar Pradesh and part in Madhya Pradesh. Imtiaz Ali 's Highway could not do miracle at box office but it was an journey encompassing six Indian States. Recently Girish Malik shot his movie Jal in Runn of Kutch which is a unique slice of Gujrat.

It appears that the trend is here to stay. Few other films are line up for release where some of the most unexplored areas are featured. Kaun Hai Kitne Pani Men is ready for release and is shot in Odisha's draught effected Kala Handi area. D-Dakshina is shot in oldest Monastery of Sikkim. Shah Rukh Khan's Raees is entirely shot in Ahmedabad and Amir is not far behind his PK is shot in several North Indian cities.

There are number of new directors who spent their formative years in smaller places, Anurag Kayshap in Varanasi, Vishal Bhardwaj in Meerut, Chaubey in Jamshedpur, Patna and Ranchi , Dhulia in Allahabad so they have tried to pen script woven around cities where they spent their formative years.

The latest trend is not something original, setting films in small cities was very common in 1950 to 1960, Chaudhvi Ka Chand, Naya Daur, Do Bigha Zamin brought regional sensibilities. Of course 1980 saw larger than life canvass more foreign locales but the younger generation has just started exploring our Indian Geographical diversity it seems the trend will continue for sometime now.
