Design is as important as the Product
Before arrival of Steve Jobs,in the computer world no body had thought that a PC can be attractive, different and working on it could be a kind of experience. Thanks to Steve gradually this thought further percolated and spread across the products. An ordinary listening device like head phone comes in hundred shapes, designs and colors. If you look around, designing a product to give it aesthetic look, a different experience is not much thought about by Indian manufacturers.
But of late, many IT companies in India are suddenly woken up and seriously started little step in the right direction, if hiring is an indication, yes action has been started. In December 2013, Samsung R&D recruited designing students from National Institute of Design, Ahemedabad at Rs18 Lac per annum. Here Cognizant recruited 20 students TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Adobe were not far behind. Same was situation at National Institute of Design Banglore where this year the recruiters offered an average salary of Rs10 to 14 lac, it received 110 offers for 44 students in the interface design course. This Institute has some very industry specific courses like design for digital experience, design for retail experience and information & interface design. Five years ago hiring was in the range of Rs 4 to 5 lac per annum.
Similarly, at NIFT, which offers specialised IT industry based electives, students used to be picked up start-ups that made mobile apps till some years ago, but now recruiters includes Amazon, Snapdeal, Myntra, Flipcart in e-retail and also Infosys as well as Wipro. It is a welcome change that 20% of NIFT's placements are now in technology with average salary Rs 4 lacs. Companies like Inmobi, Mindtree, SAP Labs are scouting designing talents from schools like Srishti , as well as talking to them to launch collaborative course in design for IT.

Let us look, what are the focussed area for IT companies now a days in design. Companies look for fresh designers in tangible products or hardware as well as intangible products like software, websites and virtual media as they have just a few seconds to grab the attention of potential customers or end users.

With this kind of design consciousness, the demand for design students in IT industry outstrips the supply, which is driving salaries. In fact freshers from Design Schools are hired at 40 to 50 % premium over engineering students.
So we are expected to see lot of creativity in designs of Devices, Apps, Websites in India.
