For media 2013 was a very exciting year, both in terms of visibility as well as overall impact. It will not be wrong to say that stories on News Channels were more far reaching and impactful vis a vis the Soaps on General Entertainment Channels. Now news is updated on sites of news channels and newspapers on 24 x 7 basis , the consumption of news on net is increasing. Specially when so many channels are streaming live news through smart mobile apps, people are going to consume news in a very different way.
3G has increased speed of streaming so it is quite obvious that online video consumption will keep everyone in Film and TV industry very busy. All the big-wigs that sneered at the lack of revenues online will finally seeing enough traction to move in. Star, Zee and T series almost every major media house is giving the scores of random 'content shop', a run for their money. T Series is the number one channel on YouTube out of India., for three year now. Star is the stickiest one. This means people spend more time now its channel online, compared any other top 10. Now 27 million Indians are logging on their tablets, laptops, iPhone or similar smart devices to watch, read, listen or simply talk by the trends, this is going to become a big market.
English Newspapers have to be careful about their dwindling readership. Going by the trend this will be the year when the circulation will either be stagnant or show downward trend. During last three years many newspapers in US either closed down or ceased print edition. It is just because people were consuming the paper but in the digital form.
On the television front, some good and some bad news are in the store. As per IFB records near abot 900 channels are on air. there will be more variety in the programming and channels. Some of the channels have started offering latest global shows such as Castle or Sherlock for instance-in the week of the release. Hindi channels are now segmenting the market finely wit second and third general entertainment channels like Star and Life OK, many are offering second or third film channel also. But those who are poor in contents they will be out of business soon.
