A new small budget film : Yahi To Pyaar Hai

First a reality check :
The success of low-budget films is proving an important factor in the industry's growth. The film industry's revenue climbed 21 per cent from the previous year to Rs 11,240 crore in 2012, according to a report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and consulting firm KPMG. The success of low-budget films has also prompted big studios and production houses to take a new look at their business models. Until a couple of years ago, studios such as Eros Entertainment bet mostly on bigbudget films involving top actors such as Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Not any more. Of the 25-odd Hindi films that Eros plans to release, 12 are in the Rs 5-10 crore budget range. Viacom 18 says almost 80 per cent of its films in 2013 will be low-budget. Disney UTV Studios will have an equal mix of star-driven and low-budget films this year.

If somebody  invest in a Rs 5-6 crore film and it does not do well, he will lose Rs 2-3 crore at the most, But if it does well, the upside can be as high as Rs 20 crore. Are low-budget, content driven films less risky for big budget films.  Investing in smaller films is a good way to hedge risks. In case one  contains the budget of a film and get great returns, it enables one to invest in more such projects. The return on investment is much higher in smaller films. If the film does well, one may end up making twice the money invested. Success of small budget films keep hundreds thousands artists, technicians and other people to gainfully employed in the profession of their passion.

All these thoughts came to my mind when I reached Hotel Oritel, Andheri to be a part of music release  function of Yahi To Pyaar Hai organised by Geeta Music. This film is produced and directed by Suraj Dev Sahu, it is not difficult to guess that he is the hero of movie, he has written songs and composed the music also.

To release the album singer Udit Narayan was invited, he kept waiting every guest for almost one hour, bad Mumbai traffic ! Prabhat Pandey surprised me by calling me to share  dais with Chief Guest for release function.

I realised that making a movie with small budget and getting it released is a hurculean task, the only thing missing is little lack of professionalism, driven purely by passion and passion alone taking charge of all departments will dilute benefit of group synergy and athird party overview. So the likes of Suraj need to learn few tricks of professionalism.
