Changing Face of Bollywood Music.
Bollywood music has really transformed during past few years. Recent success of film music such as kai Po Che, Go Goa Gone, Ghanchakkar, Ranjhana, Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani, Bhag Milka Bhaag, Shudh Desi Romance bear this out. New singers, composers, song writer are changing the way music is created in Bollywood in the old time. They have brought fresh sounds, voices and language. Now the young breed of directors and producers is also using music more innovatively in films. Apart from this , the way listeners are consuming music has also changed drastically.
ofcourse there is a good news. there is more room for experiment now, no sticking to tried and tested, boundaries are being streched in terms of texture, craft, rendition and of course the voice. you may now find all music genres the spectrum is far wide. The gap between Indian and western is getting steadily reduced, elements of South American, African to Arabian music is also richly utilized.
Due to a number of talent hunt shows like Indian Idol, Sare Gaa Maa ready platform is available to budding singers and alternate voices. With the result singers with unconventional voices are coming to centre stage. So now you have Chinmayi Sripada (Ban Ke Titlee), Shalmali Kholgade (Balam Pichkaari), Richa Sharma (Jogee), Kavita Seth (Iktara), Beni Dayal (Pappu Can't Dance Sala) these voices can not be pigeonholed as of the hero or heroine.
Unlike the older time no one is quite on the top. This is happening in Bollywood where 40 years only one female voice with so called 'pure' texure and tonality of Lata Mangeshkar fitted the bill. That was the time when new comers were i
living in the shadows of great names, even many new comers ended having soundlike voices. Now we have real voices and no one is seriously bothered whether a voice suitsthe hero or heroine or not. This is possible because lip-suncing is no longer the norm, songs are often used in background as the style of story telling is also changed. In fact now on many occasion in Bollywood movies are too becoming like instruments.
Another element which has changed Bollywood music is to pressurize to pull in the audience for a film. Days are gone when a music lover had to search for non film music to listen some different kind of music. Now a days, non film music is not having any market except for religious and to some extent classical music category.
But whatever changes taken place in the music scenerio, longevity and shelf life under threat. there are so many songs, they are like small waves that come and go. What we still look for songs that convey emotions that one can hold on to and remember for long. But those are getting rarer. There are fewer earthy melodies, fewer songs from heart and less instrumentation.
This is the reason that even today the old melodies like Aaja re Pardesi or Man Tadfat Haridarshan Ko Aaj still haunt music lovers.
