Strange are the ways of Censor Board
Munshi Prem Chand aka Dhanpat Rai Srivastava has started writing short stories and novels before independence and chronicled life and time of nation struggling on so many fronts, on one hand oppressive tyrant British rulers on the other hand its' rigid old value system. Socially relevant themes, simple language and near life characters established him a star writer. The issues raised by Prem Chand are still relevant.
He wrote his first major novel Bazaar-e-Husn ("Market of Beauty" or Red Light District) novel originally in Urdu . This was just by chance that its Hindi version was published before original Urdu from Calcutta in the year 1919, under the title 'Seva Sadan' ("The House of Service"). Original Urdu version Bazar-e-Husn was published published in 1924 from Lahore.
Bazaar-e-Husn is a tale of an unhappy housewife who is beguiled away from the path of domestic virtue into becoming a courtesan but then reforms herself and atones by serving as the manager of an orphanage for the young daughters of courtesans, the seva-sadan of the Hindi title. While the Urdu title highlights the fall of the heroine, the Hindi title highlights her redemption, and it is tempting to see the two titles as widely symptomatic of their respective literary cultures.

The film has now made in Hindi with title 'Bazar-e-Husn' recently. It is produced by A K Misra of Vision Corporation. It is some what strange that a very plain Jane Movie has been awarded A certificate by CBFC. This has shocked to many because many films with the kind of erotic item songs like Munni, Sheela, katiya, Fevicol passed unescaped with that kind of barrier on the other hand a film based on classic work of renowned author Munshi Premchand has been awarded 'A' Certificate. In fact those who have seen the movie they swear that it is a near true depiction of classical novel, no tampering with original story nor any kind of titillation. In fact the producer has tried to shoot entire movie in the narrow lanes, famous Ghats of Ganga to give a feel of 1920.
Manohar Thakur associate producer of the movie is an unhappy man. He said that the whole objective of making this movie was to show the crumbling caste, old feudal system. It is very saddening that young generation who has born in the last few years of last century will be deprived to peed into pre independence era.
Do not you feel that CBFC needs to revisit its double standards.
