Adieu Isha !
Isha is my three year old grand daughter who stays in Seattle USA. She came to visit us in India with her mother three weeks back. My wife was little apprehensive about communicating with her. The problem was slightly complicated. Isha being born and brought up in USA and staying in a community where there was no person of Indian origin around, so she is comfortable with only Americanized English. On the other hand her Nani, being born and brought up in India, is more comfortable with Hindi.
On 26th August 2012, Isha arrived in India. After stepping out of Mumbai Airport she saw her Nani. There was eye contact for few minutes. Thats it ! gap of communication melted away. She gave a big hug and their after it was commotion of pure emotions.
First few days, Nani used to speak in Hindi and grand daughter in English but both started understanding each other's language. Surprise of surprise in a week's time Isha started with sentences like "Nani aap kaisee ho", 'Mujhe Sula Do', ' Doodh De Do'. and within another few days Nani started with chest American slangs !
On her sweet short journey to india, Isha also traveled to Hyderabad to meet her Babaji and Dadiji, to Moradabad to meet her great grand mother (GGM). For GGM it was dream come true to see her 4th generation flourishing. Whenever an American comes to India, he is an easy prey for all kind of bugs dangerously exposed to allergies, but Isha enjoyed every moment. Yes mosquitos did bitten to her every day, she also scared of bugs !
To cut the long story short, when Isha started her journey back to USA, she was capable of understanding Hindi well speaking in tooti phuti Hindi, and Nani, who was scared of not understanding American english, started conversing with her grand daughter in fluent English !
