Why You Should Feel Anguished : Because Somebody want to Steal your Lake
Yesterday, residents of upmarket Oshiwara and Lokhandwala area of Andheri Suburb organised clean up drive to save beautiful Lokhandwala Lake. hardly 500 meters away from hustle bustle of Lokhandwala Market , this lake is a pleasant surprise. And bigger surprise is that many Lokhandwala residents are not aware of its existence !
This is a natural fresh water lake close to mangrove and sea . Come winter season, migratory birds from far distant lands visit the lake and make it their temporary home.
The nexus between builders, babus, politicians and land mafia has threatened the very existence of this lake. In a very clandestine way city garbage is dumped by city authorities next to the lake. If this will be allowed to happen, in another year or two the will convert into flat ground ready for shopping complex, residential buildings.
There is a urgent need to de-silt, clean the lake, remove filth from the approach road, beautify it. The residents are trying to meet the Corporators, BMC officials and tell them to do some thing to save this area. OLGA, an organization dedicated to environment protection has already started with this initiative, brought a JVC to started de-silting after some time the machine stopped operation due to some technical snag.This could not dampen spirit of volunteers. At last around 5 pm the machine again started working. It is good beginning.
I started a page on Face Book 'Save Lokhandwaala Lake' few months back, people have responded to the page quite enthusiastically. A no. of suggestions cropped up, the front of lake to be devloped with landscaped garden where young as well as old people may relax and destress themselves. There should be a musical fountain in the middle of the lake, boating, bird watching, monthly Ghazal, Geet Mehfil to be allowed etc.etc.. Before we should go for these plans, we should de-silt the lake and immediately relocate the garbage dumping else where.
Organisations like OLGA are already working in the right direction, more and more people are associating with the movement, but it needs more like minded people. Are you ready to join it.
