Gangsters of Bollywood meet with Media Gangster !
Hotel Trident is located in Bandra Kurla Complex , a fast expanding new business hub of Mumbai. Yesterday a very interesting dialogue between Bollywood and Media was initiated by 'Brunch', life style supplement of Hindustan Times at Trident . Probably it was dialogue of its own kind.
Veer Sanghvi, editorial director of HT Media specially flown from New Delhi to moderate panel discussion. Eminent Film and TV Producer Ekta Kapoor, Director Sanjay Gupta of 'Kante' fame, Director Tigmanshu Dhulia shot into fame with his recently released 'Pan Singh Tomar' were the participant. The discussion was focussed on films made on gangs, gangsters of real life. It was more academic in nature, another one was slightly on the lighter tone , Hot John Abraham, Manoj 'Bhikhu Mahtre' Bajapi and Kangna Ranaut participated in it.
To me, whole dialogue was woven around making of 'Shootout at Wadala' Ekta Kapoor's prequel to her earlier film 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' , it was a very sophisticate PR exercise ever done for the movie by a media group. But the discussions were lively, informative, gave insight into the mind of film makers who have done gang and gangster movies. Panelist Sanjay Gupta regaled audience with interesting information about making of his 'Shootout at Lokhandwala', he had actually done lot of research work, actually met with A A Khan, the man who setup the anti terrorist squad in Mumbai, a trigger happy cop.
Actually 'Shooting ......' was not the only movie of the genre, 'Deevar' was probably the first one close to real life, it was loosely based on the life and times of Haji Mastan. In fact Bombay Ganglords were also fascinated with their own life and wanted to see movie depicting them with some sympathetic overtone. It is a known fact D boss has given money to Mukri to make a film on him, production started but some how it could not see light of the screen ! One fact no body discussed : free flowing money from various Ganglords in financing films!
Tigmanshu Dhulia shared his own view point about depiction of gangsters in Bollywood , he opined that most of the Bollywood's crime films are based on sophisticated dons, who bring Azamgarh boys to shoot their rivals or to create terror but they never have a courage to do the actual killings. He does not sympathise with the characters. According to him characters outside Mumbai city defy the authority, that is more inspiring and interesting. Pan Singh Tomar, in his recently released movie was such a character who did not pick up the gun for money.
My hunch proven to be correct that the whole programme was the publicity gimmick for 'Shootout at Wadala' because second discussion was a light hearted one but panelists John, Kangana and Manoj were the actors from this movie under production ! But still I appreciate that the level and content was witty, class and stimulating. Thus setting benchmark for PR!
