Better Photography magazine has taken the challenge of finding best out of a photographer, organising 'Photographer of the year 2011 contest. I am watching this contest from last few years, gradually it is becoming bigger in scale as well as pomp and show. This year Canon joined the magazine as co sponsor.
Years' Themes
This year the competition was divided in eight categories. Eight different themes were chosen to find the best talent in different genres of photography. Each of the eight themes were open to interpretation.
Choosing the best entries was not easy. Each image was a potential winner. Yet, the ones that finally made it to this list had one thing in common—they were photographs that managed to amaze the judges. And finally, the theme winners were flown to Mumbai, they were asked to capture essence of the city going to different part for the Final Face-off.
S.L. Shanth Kumar, a Chennai based photographer was declared the Canon-Better Photography Photographer of the Year 2011 at a glittering function last night at Hyatt Residency near International Airport . Kumar works as a press photographer with Times of India, Chennai.
Kumar's effort is commendable in a way, he is not from Mumbai, in fact visited the city for the first time in his life after receiving a call from the organisers , his keen and investigative eye captured the mood of city in such a way that won the heart of judge Raghu Rai, who himself is a photographer par excellence and master of creating photo essays on cities:
