Wonderful Lokhandwala Lake Needs your support
Lokhandwala is one of the most happening place in Mumbai. Over past ten years, it has become nerve of show business. Be it Films, TV serials, modeling all are here. You will find creative people with their laptops, IPad loaded with story sketchboard, samples of music pieces, song situations, portfolio hanging around Cafe Coffee Day, Barista with dreams in their eyes. Try to throw stone on any building in Lokhandwala, chances are that it will reach to a celebrity's flat ! Also, Lokhandwala market is the real shopping place. In a stretch of hardly 1/2 km you may find the trendiest, the most fashionable, designers dresses, jewellery and other accessaries. But this is one of the most densely populated area of Mumbai, market as well as residential areas are clogged at the busy hours of the day.
If you tell any Lokhandwala resident that he is close to a fresh water lake surrounded by trees, shrubs, the chances are that he will simply show his ignorance. Everybody knows that they are close to mangroves, but fresh water lake unbelievable ! But it is true. Today, I just want to take to you this wonderful marvel of nature so close to hustle and bustle of Lokhandwala.
Okay, now our journey starts. In the back road of Lokhandwala, there are only Row houses and bungalows, a very secluded area basically used by morning walkers for free strolling. The other end of T junction will take you to Sunil Dutt Joggers Park, which is in a straight line parallel to road leading to other end of Lokhandwala. Just on the T junction, you will find a damar road, not in a good condition leading to Power Sub station. Lo Yo! the magical lake is in that stretch.
But do not feel very happy about it. It is a story of utter neglect on the part of civic authorities and other related functionaries. This has become dumping ground for waste. You may find puja samgree, polythene bags floating around giving a very morbid look. Today, I visited the lake with two of my friends, Chandrakant and Shivani Joshi, it smell so bad that it is difficult to stay there, but despite of this, charged with spirit to do some thing for the environment and a selected band of people come there of and on, try to take out the dirt and filth in their own modest way. But the point is that if we want to make it a happening and breathing space for resident, the work needed to be done on a much larger scale. You need heavy duty dredgers to work day and night for at least a month to clean the lake bed. Then think about encouraging the natural fresh water fishes, tortoises, turtles and other inhabitants live there and help the nature's natural cleaning process to take place. One cyclists standing there told us that in winter season lot many rare birds flocks and make this lake as there temporary home. Will it not be a brilliant idea to develop this area as a protected ecological park. But for this an individual's efforts will not suffice. Collective initiatives are needed.
Do visit the lake and write about it on facebook page 'Save Lokhandwala Lake', dedicated to the initiative, it may make people aware about it, it is a starting point to do something for mother nature and your environment : http://www.facebook.com/groups/254023137993596/
