Jagjit Singh : बात निकलेगी तो फिर दूर तलक जाएगी

I am sitting in front of my Deck listening to some of the choicest Ghazals of Jagjit Singh, singer with velvet voice who sang Ghazal for every Aam and Khas. This is the way I decided to mourn for departed soul. When I think of Jagjit Singh, and look back it is almost opening of yadon kaa daricha
I started as music critic for one of the most popular woman's magazine 26 years back. As a critic I have been a witness to his long musical journey, listened to each and every thing sung/ composed by him and reviewed. Some time compliments and sometime brickbats also. Job of a critic is slightly tricky, in the process you make a lot of relations and friends in the fraternity but when it comes to evaluating the work, you simply can not carried away ! The work has to be evaluated with objectivity. In his creative and my critic role, there were instances when I appreciated his work when others did not, I expressed my reservation while others showered praise. I will narrate two instances. He composed Sajda with Lata Mangeshkar, everybody praised him but I wrote in my column critically about it, he met me thereafter at Delhi Airport asked me the reason, I told him you have not allowed her to be Lata, rather fitted her in Chitra's mould. He accepted candidly. Another time was release of his Beyond Time, ghazal album in which he used synthesizer, even thought most heinous in the eyes of puritans, I gave 5 stars in my column, a very rare honour, in fact, it was proved as one of the most talked about and praised album later. Then I remember sudden death of his son Vivek, I met him few days after and gave him my Ghazal, one of its sher was :
मैं रहा उसके लिए आशियाँ बनाने में , पल गुजर गया वो सो गया तब तक

he composed ghazal rendered to me but said that he will never sing it in public as it make him very touchy and emotional. (Actually when Vivek met fatal accident on that fateful night, Jagjit was busy in construction of Banglow in Loanawala for his son)I can write reams of paper on Jagjit and his creativity but some other time. I would like to share the secret beyond his success. He brought Ghazal from the four walls of puritan mould and shown a way that simple can be more penetrating directly in the heart. He picked up shairs from all generations be it Mirza Ghalib, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Qateel Shifai, Shahid Kabir, Ameer Meenai, Kafeel Aazer, Sudarshan Faakir and Nida Fazli, and contemporary writers like Zaka Siddiqi, Nazir Bakri, Faiz Ratlami and Rajesh Reddy. But made sure to choose simplest words with deep meanings of various facets of relationship. No wonder he won hearts of music lovers of the entire Indian Subcontinent, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. Wherever you find Desi ( Indie, Pakie, Bangladeshi) abroad, there will be a great following for Jagjit Singh.

Briefly About him
Jagjit Singh (8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was an Indian ghazal singer, composer, music director, activist and entrepreneur. Known as "The Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife Chitra who started doing jingles for ads initially, their fortune changed with pathbreaking Nazm/ Ghazal album Unforgettables. Rest is history . They became the first ever successful husband-wide duo act in the history of recorded Indian music. Together, they are considered to be the pioneers of modern ghazal singing and regarded as the most successful recording artistes outside the realm of Indian film music. He has sung in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali languages. He was awarded India's third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2003.Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by simplifying the complex form of ghazals into a simpler form of ghazals by amalgamating ghazal and geet. His music became popular in mass media through films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Jagjit Singh is considered to be the most popular ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of commercial success. With a career spanning over five decades and a repertoire comprising 80 albums, the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining. He is the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by Prime Minister - Atal Behari Vajpayee - also a critically acclaimed poet - in two albums, Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna (2002).Jagjit Singh was the first Indian composer (and together with his wife Chitra Singh the first recording artist) in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for their album Beyond Time (1987). Together with sitar player Ravi Shankar and other leading figures of Indian classical music and literature, Singh had voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India and lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India's traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians. He had lent active support to several philanthropic endeavors such as the library at St. Mary's School, Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA.
