Bollywood Music in not a loosing proposition
I have cherished memories of Rhythm House at Kala Ghoda in Mumbai. My visits to this iconic records and cassettes shop were no less the musical journey. Decked with cassettes and records of latest Bollywood,Hollywood, Jaz, Indian Classical, Western Classical, Pop, Rock this shop used to attract large crowd, people of all age groups, lovers of all genre of music. Music companies used to test launch their products at this shop. But it is past, you may not find crowd any more at Rhythm House. Is it an indication that music is dying ?
No honey its not true. People are indulged into listening more music. But of course the form has definitely and drastically changing. Not surprising a number of established music companies like TIPS Cassettes and Record Co. have stopped coming up with CDs of their latest music until and unless there is firm order.
KPMG in its report on music business mentions that now music reaches to its end user in various other formats such as internet, mobile caller tunes, ringtones in addition to conventional physical form ( such as Cassettes, CDs). See the

In the year 2006 Physical Form of music amounted Rs 602 Crore while Digital Form was insignificant Rs 90 Crore, year 2007 shown growing sign of Digital Rs 140 Crore while Physical reduced to Rs 560 Crore. Last year Digital surpassed Physical by almost Rs 100 Crore as against Rs 320 Crore Digital comes Rs 420 Crore. As per KPMG estimate in the year 2015 Physical form will be only 6% of the total pie.
Understanding importance of digital, Shemaroo the largest independent aggregator in Bollywood music owning around 2500 titles, now put in palce a team of 80 people to execute its digital aspirations.They are working on key platforms like mobile, internet, IPTV. The company also
has more then 300 odd top grosser movies's Video rights, and now they are trying innovative revenue sharing agreements with top online players. Each time clip of Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halal or Chupke Chupke type of film is watched on YouTube , Shemaroo earn revenue from the advertisement played there either as crawler at the bottom of the screen.
So it is only the form has been changed but music is thriving !
