CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA : A Chinese Chat Not So Tasty
Warner Bros have tried to make a mark on mainstream Indian cinema with their mega budget CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA , but honestly speaking hot top bracket saleable star like Akshay Kumar with damsel Deepika Padukone in stunning Chinese locales did not make a outstanding movie. Reason, a good script is missing !
A uneducated bump who work as helper at a Dhaba in Chandni Chowk area prays to Ganpati, visit every baba and pujari in hope of changing his fortunes until he gets a ticket to new adventure in China.
Director Nikhil Advani failed to notice that script done by writer duo Shridhar Raghvan and Rajat Arora is incoherent and language and grammar confused and incomprehensible. They did not decide that it is to be a spoof or a action comedy, a heroic tale of the underdog or just an overcooked, overly flavoured mixed veg that is more likely to give you Delhi belly. It does not help that none of the character are likable enough to earn the viewer's loyalty or sympathy and not even Akshay Kumar as luckless Sidhu.
Story is like this ; Sidhu (Akkshay Kumar) is a uneducated simple minded typical Chandni Chowk cook's assistant who keeps making rounds of astrologers, sadhus and quacks to get quickrich and all the time kicked round by his foster father(Mithun Da). Two men arrived from China to search reincarnation of Liu Shen, a legendary warrior of their village. Due to misinterpretation of Chopstick, Sidhu's Chinese friend (Ranveer Shorey), the two Chinese misunderstood Sidhu as reincarnation of their warrior hero Liu Shen and took him to China to fight villain Hojo (Gordon Liu). This bald villain is a kind of monstor who can decapittate people with his bowler hat and goes around with an albino sidekick. He had tossed a Chinese cop Chiang (Roger Yuan) from Great Wall of China, who lost his memory, wife twin daughters Sakhi and Meow Meow in pure Hindi filmi style of seventies. One of the twin Sakhi (Deepika Padukone) lands up from India, her mission is very simple to find out her twin( Meow Meow also played by Deepika Padukone) who by the way works for Hojo.
As I talked about the character of Sidhu earlier, the hero who worship potato, shades tears most of time, is beaten , spat and pissed upon by the villain To late in the film he runs into Chiang, the old cop who married an Indian lady and lost his memory due to deadly blow by Hojo and his men. Chiang regains his memory and teaches cosmic Kung fu so that Sidhu can fight with Hojo and his henchmen. Through all this mayhem on and around Great Wall of China, the authorities are asleep, the film sputters to life when Sidhu got trained, the long awaited climax is a let down.
The Chinese government for the first time allowed a foreign movie shot around the Great wall, eye catching locale, some of the good shots in urban locale makes a good backdrop. But the point is that without a good script every thing appears to be a waste. May be the movie make moolah on box office due to response value of Akshay Kumar but a viewer has never expected such a mindless madness from Warner banner.
