TASHAN
TASHAN Banner:Yash Raj Films
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor
Action: Peter Hein Choreography: Vaibhavi Merchant
Cinematography: Ayananka Bose Music: Vishal, Shekhar Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Producer: Aditya Chopra
The movie is set on a little different backdrop, although one may find little similarity with Bunty Bubbly as this film also set in the backdrop of Kanpur. The story is about the bad guy Bhayyaji (Anil Kapoor) who has this strange penchant for learning English and flaunts his style in his own way. For this, he seeks the help of call centre executive Jimmy (Saif Ali Khan) who is reluctant to do so but then thanks to the intelligent and beautiful Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), he takes up the assignment and has a tough time trying to be a teacher to a don. In this process, he falls for the pretty Pooja and love happens. However, things don't look so straight as they seem and as a result of some unexpected twists and turns, the don Bhayyaji gets angry while the slick Jimmy gets deceived in a game of double crossing. All this apart, there is another character Bachchan Pandey (Akshay Kumar) a professional hit man who is set for a particular job of tracking a target and eliminating it and in the end he becomes the target. What follows is a roller coaster ride of action, high voltage drama and sentiment which can be enjoyed by watching it on screen.
Finally, the story writer comes up with something little dramatic and a bit twisty, though his story line is very weak, the presentation of the story and the narration of the plot is OK. The pace is not slow and though there were some flaws, the screenplay kind of made up for the drawbacks. Music was excellent in terms of the background score and two numbers but nothing worthwhile to take home. A folk tune used has some kind of nostalgic feeling carries you to rich eastern UP's folk tradition. The editing desk could have been a bit more crisp, full marks to the camera and the costume departments which have come up with a master's job and skillful capturing of the moment. Coming to the cast, Kareena Kapoor was more of a glam doll and did her bit while Saif Ali Khan could not come out with his usual charms and presence. The real tussle was between Akshay Kumar who has come with a brilliant performance yet again and Anil Kapoor . All said and done, it was Anil Kapoor who has the steel in him to give any top star a run for the credits and recognition. The others were upto the mark and contributed well to the movie. Some thing about the action or fighting scenes, to be very honest look very unreal. However the director tried to capture picture card like locale accross the country.
Dances with firnag girls look like streight lift MTV's late night shows with bare minimum clothes and lot of pelvic gyrating.
Tashan, movie which was so much talk about before release. Many many things to talk about it, be it its name. They thought they can set some trend. Remember Gandhigiri from Munnabhai ? Everyone knows it now but I don't think Tashan can symbolize same. Though in generic way .. Tashan can be called as "passion" or may be "style". Anyway, lets move on from its name to something more important, however, even multiplexes said no to run movie as there were conflict between multiplexes and Yashraj films about revenue sharing. and till writing of this piece it is not yet resolved. So there were noticeable curiosity about movie because of Karina and Saif Chemistry, because Kareena's new zero sized look, because of Mr. superhit Akshay Kumar who is just giving hit over hit and because of Anil Kapoor, senior yet fresh actor to our movie industry. But what we get, news are that Tashan does not get a decent opening, however those who saw it felt (I am also among them) like cheated. From producer like Yash Raj Film's who just added director Vijaya Krishna Acharya in their camp, this type of poor compilation was not expected.
