LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS : INTERESTING CROSSOVER BY MANISH ACHARYA
LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS : INTERESTING CROSSOVER BY MANISH ACHARYA
-Pradeep Gupta
Yesterday I saw Manish Acharya's Loins of Punjab Presents here in Fun
Republic. It gave me an impression that another competitor for Mira
Nair and Deepa Mehta in crossover genre has arrived.
It is a small film on shoe string budget which is evident from a
number of frames but it allow you to laugh. But I do not understand
what prompted Acharya to use four letter dirty words.
The Film is all about a made for TV 'Desi Idol' contest in New
Jersey. and pranks that each one undertakes to make it to the Top. The
choice is of course limited, age and color no barrier. Ruthless rich
and philanthropist(?) Rita Kapoor played by Shabana Azami, an over
protected Preeti Patel of Potel owner Patels (Ishita Sharma), a
reckless actress Sania
Rahman who do not know Hindi (Seema Rehman), a statistics spewing
businessman Vikram Tejwani (Manish Acharya) an American
Entrepreneurial Jogi ( who combines Jogging and Yoga) Josh Cohen
(Michael Raimond), a bhangra rapper who can hardly sing any thing in
Punjabi but spit atleast one four letter dirty word in one sentence
(Ajay Naidu) are the final contestants of Desi Idol.. They have been
sniffed out from raff by three sparingly talented judges and of course
supported by the ridiculously decandent event manager Sudhakar Bokadae
(Jameel Khan) who offers the audience his services ranging from
funeral, mundan to marriage.
The film gives a fiar idea about behind the scene scheming,
bargaining, inverse racism,
Cut throught and of course cross cultural issues of identity, brewing
young love.
The film operates on very subtle levels.
Director Manish Acharya is a fresh pass out of NY University and his
skill lies in treatment and narrative style.
A must dekho for those who understand and appreciate crossover
subjects and closely want to read mind of "'Desis"
