When we see remake of a hit film, we tend to compare it scene by scene with
the original. That's why remakes of hits are most of the time a big
disappointment. Kamal Sadanah tried his hands on his father late Brij
Sadanah"s hit *Victoria No.203* which was one of the longest running films
in the year 1972/73 when it was released.
The original *Victoria No.203 *is still remembered for its hit songs, out of
the box comic performance of Ashok Kumar and Pran. The lead was played by
Navin Nichol and Saira Banu.
The remake is directed by Anant Mahadevan and in case one watches it without
drawing parallel with the original, it seems quite entertaining. The remake
has taken certain deviation in the script but the concept and storyline is
less or more same which was crafted by master craftsman K.A.Narayan.
The movie is about the theft of some of the world's rarest and exquisite
diamonds which are worth more than 100 crores. Bobby Bombata (Javed Jaffrey)
an industrialist and his girlfriend Devyani (Preeti Jhangiani) plan the
theft of these diamonds along with Ranjit (Kamal Sadanah) a cold-blooded
assassin. They hire Tora (Tora Khasgir), an expert acrobat/ professional
thief to steal the diamond from a high security area. Tora double crosses
Bobby with the help of her brother Karan (Rajesh Khera), but gets killed by
Bobby's henchmen. She sensed the danger so concealed the diamond in Victoria
No.203. Raman, the driver of the carriage *Victoria No. 203* is unaware of
this and offers to help her, but the police put him behind the bars on the
charge of murder. Jimmy (Jimmy Sheirgill), Superintendent of Crime Branch in
the guise of a diamond expert and two small-time-but-quite-old crooks Raja
(Anupam Kher) and Rana (Om Puri) are also behind the diamonds. Raman's
daughter Sara (Sonia Vinod Mehra) is elder among the two sisters takes up
the responsibility of freeing her father. Who after a chain of murder, song/
dance, bit of romance and comic relief ultimately gets the possession of the
diamond, get her father freed from jail, happily marries with SP Jimmy so
the happy END.
Anant Mahadevan is not able to keep the fast pace of the story, this is
where he lacks, with the result viewer is not able to stay tight gripped on
his seat. I do not know whose idea it was but co branding of Bombay Dying
and Go Air is very childish. Jimmy and Sonia's romance is very dull.
Emotional scenes lacks emotion. The last 15 minutes leading are anti
climactic, god knows whose idea it was. Viju Shah's music particularly
'Deedni…' has appeal, background score reminds Hollywood thrillers.
Cinematography is particularly trespassing infra red by Tora appeals.Om Puri
and Anupam Kher share a great chemistry in the movie, in fact they are the
only saving grace of the remake. Javed Jaffrey as Bobby Bambata imparts
hilarity and comic relief to his role as a villain. Sonia Vinod Mehra has
lineage of legendry Vinod Mehra but needs a better director.
