srilanka preferred location for shooting

SRI LANKA : LOCATION, LOCATION AND BAHUT SARI LOCATIONS
FOR FILMS

Recently I was in Srilanka. Though it was a brief stopover on our way to Malaysia but whatever the time was at my disposal and whatever I could see, I feel that this Island is a small universe in itself. It contains as many variation of scenery, climate as some countries a dozen times its size.
Over the centuries, the Island has acted as a melting pot.. In the 6th centaury B.C. emperor Ashok., sent his son, daughter with few of his courtesans across the seas to spread message of Lord Budha. During the course of their voyage, the contingent reached Sri Lanka also and left strong foot prints of Budhist faith on the island. The descendents of this contingent mingled with locals and thus the Singhalese clan came into existence. Also, people keep on ferrying between Southern Coast of India and Srilanka and many among them specially of Tamil region settled there. Thus the country was influenced by many cultural and religious groups.
Shooting of movie is a complicated affair. It is really difficult to find out the right locations, preferably in the close proximity to each other. In Srilanka, one could discover almost every kind of location/ natural set to suit the need of a producer, all of them easily accessible within a few hours by road, boat or air. It offers beautiful palm studded beaches, misty mountain, deep ravines and gorges, fast flowing rivers and rapids, isolated craggy and windswept plains, and above all abundance of wild life-elephants.
Not surprising, a number of international films have been shot on location in Srilanka.
Srilanka came on international shooting radar with Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Finch’s Elephant Walk as well as Gregory Pecks The Purple Rain. John and Bo Derek’s version of Tarzen, the Ape Man, David Lean’s Oscar winning The Bridge on River Kwai, Steven Speilberg’s Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jungle Book Part II : Mogli and Babloo. Among the India Directors, Deepa Mehta shot The Water here, replicated Benaras Ghats.
Given the number of foreign movies made in Srilanka and the fact that Srilankan indigenous film industry is well developed, the movies makers have at their disposal experienced and proficient film crews which is an added advantage. If you are interested to shoot exotic locations with a very reasonable budget..
