THE WHOLE WORLD IS OPENED IN HINDI FILM MUSIC NOW

Recently I have gone through an article written by Luke Kenny in ‘Brunch’ on latest trends in Indian (read Hindi ) Film Music. He has tried to trace the traces of different rhythms and flavors.

I agree with Kenny and also feel the kind of songs are recorded for Hindi films in the recent past, the music is heavily borrowed from Hip Hop to Rock, from Sufi to World music. In fact now our new age music directors know very clearly that the large part of the crowd who listen to Hindi Film Music is gennext and of course like in fashion, style it needs variety, experimentation and variation in music also..

In fact other influences are not a new thing in Hindi Film Music. Even in sixties Shankar Jaikishen tried their hands from Spanish Rhythms to Rock N Roll. Remember their ‘Dekho Ab toh..tumse hai dil ko pyar’ from ‘Janwar’, it was a ditto note to note copy of Beatles’ I want to hold your hand’. Listen to any sixties or early seventies dance song picturised on Shammi Kapu. You will find Rock N Roll and Pop rolled in one. ‘Ai Ai ya Karun Mai Kya Suko Suko’, ‘O Haseena Julfon Wali’ were also powerful work of Rock. R.D.Burman also used world music in his compositions, probably, he was first to use Brazlian Bossa Nova rhythem with song ‘Maar Dalega Darde Jigar’, which was heavily copied later. Pancham da besides borrowing heavily, he mastered in merging musical boundaries across genres. Composer, loaded with gold ornaments, Bappi Lahiri brought disco sounds to Hindi Films, ‘One way ticket’ became ‘Hari Om Hari’, in fact Bappi’s disco sounds became national phenomenon. A.R.Rehman also tried to break monotony, and gave way to some change. He brought Reggae, Rock sounds and made them one of the major ingredient of his South Indian Sambhar. Just see his Reggae Tadka in Roja’s ‘Dil hai chotta sa’, powerful Love Ballad ‘Tu hi Re’ or powerful guitar work in Rock ‘Masti Ki Pathshalla’.

In the last few years Shankar Ahsan Loy trio with powerful guitar work merged sufiana and qawalli influences and given piece like ‘Mitwa’, ‘Kajra Re’ which have earned cult status. Vishal Shekhar brought Hip Hop to Hindi films, they have given ‘Right here right now’ in ‘Bluffmaster’. Another name comes to mind is Pritam who has heavily used Rock and Pop elements in his compositions, Dhoom2’s ‘Crazie Kiya Re’ and Life in a Metro s ‘In dino’ and ‘Alvida’. Himesh Reshamiya will be remembered for his Club kind compositions beside his nasal twang renderings in fact he has helped many younger music enthusiatics to take up DJ career.

Another influence on our film music is from our very close door, Whether it is Bong Runa Laila from undivided Pakistan or Najia & Zoheb Hasan from western part ,our directors as well as composers always tried to tap Pakistani talent as well as their sounds to merge in the great mainstream of Indian Sub Continent called Hindi Films. Whether it is classical sound of Gulam Ali, Nusrat fateh Ali Khan, Menhdi Hasan or trendy Rock/ Pop from String (Sar Kiye Yeh Pahar, Yeh aakhri raat ho na), Junoon (Tere bina, Who Lamhe, Aadat ).

Umeed Hai yeh Silsila will continue and the Hindi Film Music Lovers will continue to get the very best from all the five continents.
