FILM LENGTH : TRIM IS FIT
FILM LENGTH: TRIM IS FIT !
It is not long ago, most of the Indian commercial films used to take their own time to tell a story, essentially studded with ‘n’ number of song-dance sequences, comic interludes and lot of rona dhona. In fact, the audiences of that time had no complaints as their entertainment was limited. Having put hard earned money for tickets, they did not mind watching long films.
Remember AVM blockbuster of forties ‘Vedala Ulagam,’ it was having as many as 25 songs! Have a close look to bollywood, the average film never ran for less than three hours. ‘Hum Apke Hain Kaun’ of nineties had 14 songs, moved at a snail’s pace and dragged on for nearly four hours. Still the audience was engrossed and glued to it as it showcased joint Hindu family and its rich wedding ceremonies.
Normally Hollywood films run one to two hours. Of course, there are few exception like, second world war classic ‘From Here to Eternity’, ‘Gone with the Wind’, biblical extravaganzas ‘Benhur’ and ‘Ten Commandments’. ‘Longest Day’ based on landing of allied forces on the Normandy Beach in 1944 was really a long lenth movie more than three hours.
We now observe some significant change in pattern of commercial Hindi films. More and more films have cut down on length, although this does not make many of them crisper or more watch able. New as well as old film makers have joined this bandwagon. Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Eklavya’, Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Nishabd’, ‘Black Friday’, Rima Kagti’s ‘Honeymoon Travel Pvt. Ltd’ all these movies have a running time less than two hours still no one is complaining. In fact today’s audience have no faltu time or patience to sit through long films packed with too many songs and too many comic interludes or sub plots.
Reason for this change contributes to the more intelligent and discerning audience whose ‘paisa vasool’ depends sleek, true to life plo
