Vikalp : Showcase of Alternate Cinema

After glamorous MAMI Film Festival in Mumbai, here comes another Film Festival 'Vikalp', which showcase Jindgi ki sachaiyan i.e. face to face with bitter truth of life. The driving force behind this weeklong festival is Aditya Seth, a young film activist and documentary film maker. Aditya has become well known name in the documentary making, he is the one who has also produced documentary films for UNESCO..
Festival has already started on 20th March 2006 in Mumbai at National College Bandra and will continue upto 25th March 2006. This year the focus of Vikalp is independent films originates from Belgium. The Belgian selection include independent films with social content, entwined with personal visual approach by young film makers. As these independent makers do not have commercial considerations so they are very honest close to heart and canned the reality of life.
Yesterday, I have seen La Raison du Plus Fort, a documentary by Patric Jean. It is about a system which fights with the poor instead of poverty. Set up in Marsseille city where black, brown, white legal/ illegal migrants from many country lives in depilated houses not more then the size of cubicles in sub human conditions. There country of origin are different but they feel themselves a part of the country which has given them shelter. The documentary takes the viewer to a tour where they feel their humanness, in a jail, in the dock or down in the basement with their desires, fears and despair. The film gives an idea that European democracies are far from being a society of equal rights for everybody.
Host of Belgian independent film makers like Benedicte Lienard, Boris Lehman, Laurent Goverts and Tristan Wibault are in town and are easily available for discussion about their works as well as their craft at the time of screening in evening as well as during day time at Soul Dish and Seijo very close to the venue of festival.
By the way a number of short films as well as documentaries produced by Indian film makers will also be screened at Vikalp.
